Chicago Sky News Release
CHICAGO - The Chicago Sky have traded guard Chelsea Newton and the 21st overall pick to the Sacramento Monarchs, in exchange for the 10th pick in the 2007 WNBA Draft, Sky
General Manager Bo Overton announced today. The Sky will have the 3rd, 10th, 20th draft picks in this year's 2007 WNBA Draft being aired on ESPN2 on April 4th at noon. Newton was selected by the Sky in the WNBA Expansion Draft, November 2005. Last season, Newton started in 11 games, averaged 24 minutes per game and scored 6.5 points per game.
"We have great affection for Chelsea. She is a terrific young player who has a bright future in this League," said Sky CEO Margaret Stender. "With the Monique Currie and Dominique Canty acquisitions plus our returning athletes, the Sky has many guards. This trade gives us needed flexibility. Additionally, we wanted Chelsea to go to a team where she could be successful. She played a significant role in the Monarch Championship season and they were anxious to have her back. As much as we will miss Chelsea...it is a WIN for all concerned."
Newton was selected by the Monarchs in the second round (22nd overall) of the WNBA Draft in 2005. Newton helped lead the Monarchs to their first WNBA championship title in 2005, starting in all 34 games and all eight playoff games as a rookie in 2005.
The Chicago Sky is the newest of 13 teams in the WNBA, the longest-running women's professional sports league in the world. The Sky celebrated it inaugural season in 2006. For more information, visit www.chicagosky.net.
