Chelsea Newton returns to Monarchs

SACRAMENTO, CALIF., March. 23, 2007- The Sacramento Monarchs today announced Chelsea Newton would return to the organization for the upcoming 2007 season. The Monarchs also acquired Chicago's 2007 second round draft pick, all in exchange for Sacramento's 2007 first round draft pick.

The 5'11" guard was originally selected by Sacramento in the second round (22nd overall) of the 2005 WNBA Draft. As a rookie, Newton started every game for the Monarchs en route to winning the 2005 WNBA Championship. On November 15, 2005, she was selected by the WNBA's newest franchise, the Chicago Sky, in the WNBA Expansion Draft for the 2006 season.

Through her two seasons in the WNBA, Newton averages 5.3 points, 2.2 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 1.0 steals, 0.3 blocks and 22.3 minutes per game. Last year with the Sky, Newton averaged 6.5 points, 2.6 rebounds, 2.1 assists, 1.3 steals, 0.3 blocks and 24 minutes per game.

"We are extremely thrilled to be reuniting Chelsea with the Monarchs," said Monarchs General Manager John Whisenant. "She was crucial in the team's 2005 Championship run and we look forward to regaining her athleticism and defensive skills for the upcoming season."

The 2006 WNBA Western Conference Champion Sacramento Monarchs will host the Los Angeles Sparks in their Home Opener on Saturday, June 2, at 7 p.m., at ARCO Arena, in a rematch of the 2006 WNBA Western Conference Finals. Sacramento begins the season with their first four games on the road, including the WNBA season opener against the 2006 WNBA Champion Detroit Shock on Saturday, May 19, at 12:30 p.m. PDT.
