Sky Signs WNBA Champion & Record Holder Ticha Penicheiro

CHICAGO, February 22, 2012 - Head Coach and General Manager Pokey Chatman announced today that the Chicago Sky have signed veteran point guard Ticha Penicheiro, from the Los Angeles Sparks.

Penicheiro is one of the most accomplished players in WNBA history with a WNBA Championship, a WNBA Career Assist Record (2560), a four time All-Star and the honor of being selected as one of the Top 15 WNBA Players of all time in 2011 as well as being named as an Honorable Mention in the WNBA All-Decade Team in 2006. In her fourteen year career Penicheiro has led her team to the play-offs ten times with her Championship coming in 2005 as a member of the Sacramento Monarchs.

"A true leader, great teammate, and All-Time WNBA leader in assists, are just a few things that come to mind when speaking about Ticha. Needless to say, I'm thrilled she has chosen to join the Chicago Sky. I'm looking forward to the wealth of experience she will bring to our young core players, as well as continuing some of the best offensive efficiency of her career."

Penicheiro spent the past two seasons leading the Los Angeles Sparks. In 2011 she averaged 6 points and 4.8 assists per game. Prior to joining the Sparks Ticha spent twelve seasons with the Sacramento Monarchs. Ticha has averaged 6.2 points, 5.9 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game throughout her career and has the experience and leadership qualities that will help the Sky reach the post-season and beyond.

"As I enter my 15th WNBA season, I have decided to join the Chicago Sky. I'm very excited about the opportunity of playing in the city of Chicago, with an amazing group of talent. The mixture of young and veteran players is very appealing and I'm stoked about bringing some of my experience to a franchise that has all the tools to accomplish big things. I know it sounds cliché, but the sky is really the limit. I can't wait to get the season underway."

Penicheiro was selected second overall by the Sacramento Monarchs in the 1988 WNBA Draft, after a successful college career in which she led Old Dominion University to the 1997 Championship game, being named a two-time Kodak All-American and earning the Wade Trophy as a Senior.
