Chicago Sky News Release
CHICAGO - The Chicago Sky has signed free agents Zhaque Gray and Destiny Williams to training camp contracts. Per team policy, contract terms were not disclosed.
Zhaque Gray, a 5'8 guard, started and played 33 games for Penn State in 2011-2012. In her senior season, Gray was awarded Honorable Mention All Big Ten after averaging 10.4 points per game during the regular season and earned a spot on the Lady Lion Classic All-Tournament Team. Gray was furthermore recognized for her on-court performance and integrity with the 2012 Big Ten Sportsmanship Award. With a 10-point performance against LSU en route to the 2012 NCAA Sweet Sixteen, Gray surpassed the 900-point mark for her career. With the ability to shoot the long ball, Gray contributed a 34.9 percent 3-point field goal percentage and moved into seventh on Penn State's career three-pointers chart (149).
Following a standout collegiate career, Gray signed with Wasserburg, Germany in 2013 and led the team to their seventh German DBBL Championship. In high school, the Chicago native led Prep John Hope High School to three Chicago League Championships and was selected as Chicago Public League's Female Athlete of the Year. Earlier this month, Gray was one of over 40 players that attended an open tryout session hosted by the Chicago Sky coaching staff. She is the first open tryout participant in franchise history to earn a training camp invitation.
Destiny Williams, a 6-foot-1 power forward and 2013 graduate from Baylor University, helped the Lady Bears to a 34-1 overall record and Big 12 Conference Title. As a senior, Williams averaged 8.2 points and ranked No. 2 on the team (behind Brittney Griner) in rebounds on the season with 6.6 boards per game. As a key contributor off Kim Mulkey's bench, Williams earned the 2013 Big 12 Conference Sixth Man Award and was named to the Big 12 Conference Championship's All-Tournament Team.
She was also an integral part of Baylor's perfect 2011-12 season when the Lady Bears finished with an overall record of 40-0 and won the NCAA Women's Tournament National Championship. In 2012, Williams was named to the Final Four All-Tournament Team and Second-Team All-Big 12. She finished her career at Baylor with 906 points and 770 rebounds in just three seasons (played one season at Illinois before transferring to Baylor). Most recently, Williams led ICIM Arad to the 2013-14 Romanian Cup Title averaging a double double with 16.7 points and 12.3 rebounds per game.
The Chicago Sky begins training camp on Sunday, April 27, 2014.
