Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters won their fifth-straight game with a 4-3 win over the Bridgeport Bluefish on a beautiful Saturday night at Constellation Field. The Skeeters handed Bridgeport starter Robert Carson his first loss of the season en-route to their fifth-straight win. The winning streak is the longest by Sugar Land since the team won 10-straight from June 6-14. The Skeeters improved their record to 19-23 in the second half and 55-57 overall.
The Skeeters broke up the pitcher's duel in the bottom of the fourth after both sides exchanged zeroes for the first three and a half frames. Chris Wallace drew his second walk of the game with a one-out free pass and moved up to second on a single up the middle from Travis Scott. Renny Osuna rifled a double into left to score Wallace and put the home team on top, 1-0. Kevin Russo poked a lazy line drive into left, bringing home Scott to increase the cushion to 2-0.
The Bluefish answered the Skeeters offense with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Ethan Chapman reached on a one-out bunt single and advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt from starting pitcher, Kelvin Villa. After a groundout, Josh Prince hit a two-out triple to center to score Chapman. Welington Dotel followed with a Texas-League double down the right field line to push across Prince and tie the contest at two and chase Villa from the game.
With both sides continuing to exchange zeroes, Sugar Land eventually regained the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh to chase Carson from the game. Amadeo Zazueta poked a single through the right-side of the infield and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Willy Taveras. Jeff Dominguez hooked an RBI double inside the third base bag to bring home Zazueta and reclaim the lead for the Skeeters, 3-2. Dominguez would steal third on the ensuing pitch before coming in on a sacrifice fly from Delwyn Young to move the score to 4-2.
Robbie Weinhardt worked a scoreless eighth with a pair of strikeouts before handing the ball off to Derrick Loop in the ninth. After back-to-back strikeouts to start the ninth, Andres Rodriguez doubled down the left field line and came in to score on a single up the middle from Matt Wessinger, cutting the score to 4-3. Loop earned his 14th-save of the season by striking out Chapman to close out the game. The southpaw saw his streak of 22-straight scoreless appearances come to an end, but clinched the victory for the Skeeters.
