Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release

(SUGAR LAND, Texas) - The Sugar Land Skeeters were unable to hang on to a three-run lead, losing 4-3 to the Albuquerque Isotopes on Saturday night at Constellation Field.

Albuquerque capped off four unanswered runs with a two-run seventh inning. The Isotopes scored both of their seventh inning runs after third baseman Sean Mendoza was unable to corral a Rio Ruiz pop up in shallow left field. The error allowed Brian Serven and Wynton Bernard to score.

The Skeeters jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a three-run opposite field homer from JJ Matijevic in the third inning. It was Matijevic's 10th home run since being promoted to the Skeeters, and his 19th overall of the year. His 19 combined homers are second-most of Astros minor leaguers.

Albuquerque cut into the lead in the sixth on RBI singles from Colton Welker and Alan Trejo.

JP France got the start for the Skeeters, allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out six batters through six innings. Seth Martinez was on in relief when Ruiz's pop-up scored a pair and received the loss. Josh James struck out a pair through a scoreless eighth inning.

Nelson Gonzalez moved to 3-0 on the season, striking out three batters in a scoreless sixth inning. Albuquerque starter Jose Mujica went four innings and allowed three runs on six hits.

The Skeeters have yet to name a starter for their contest at 6:05 p.m. on Sunday against Albuquerque at Constellation Field. The Isotopes will send out right-hander Ryan Castellani for the start.

Tickets for the rest of the Skeeters' 2021 regular season are on sale and can be purchased by visiting sugarlandskeeters.com/tickets.
