Sugar Land Space Cowboys News Release
SUGAR LAND, Texas - The Sugar Land Skeeters were unable to keep pace with the Lancaster Barnstormers, dropping a 10-6 shootout on Saturday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium. Both teams combined for 16 runs and 31 hits. The loss sends the Skeeters to 13-22 in the second half and 49-56 overall.
Starting pitcher Roy Merritt was tagged with the loss after allowing a season-high 12 hits and eight runs over 3.0 innings of work. His streak of 10-straight quality starts came to a close following a six-run fourth inning.
The Skeeters pounded out five of their 15 hits in the first inning to put up a crooked number and stake an early lead. Denny Almonte led off the inning with a walk, but was caught stealing second before Jeff Dominguez roped a double. The Sugar Land outfielder came in to score on an RBI single from Travis Scott that allowed the backstop to advance to second on the throw to the plate. Daryle Ward, Chris Wallace and Johan Limonta all reached on three-straight singles with Ward and Limonta each picking up an RBI to put the Skeeters on top, 3-0.
Lancaster answered the Skeeters early rally with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second. Luke Hughes drew a one-out walk and Lance Zawadzki reached on a single to put two runners aboard. Derrick Pyles loaded the bases with a single before Yusuke Kajimoto lifted a sacrifice fly to center to score the first run for the Barnstormers. Anderson Feliz followed with an RBI single to cut the score to 3-2.
Merritt was unable to record an out in the third inning to chase the southpaw from the game. Hughes, Zawadzki, Pyles, Kajimoto, Feliz and Kent Matthes all recorded hits to open the inning, including back-to-back home runs from Feliz and Matthes to put up a six spot and send Merritt to the clubhouse, trailing 8-3.
Feliz would go on to pick up his fifth-RBI of the game in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run double to push the score to 10-3. The Barnstormers third baseman would finish a triple shy of the cycle, going 4-for-5.
The Skeeters trimmed the deficit to four in the top of the seventh following five-straight singles to open the inning. Dominguez and Delwyn Young picked up an RBI in the inning, including a two-run base knock from Young to narrow the score to 10-6.
Sugar Land would be unable to push across any more runs for the remainder of the game, taking the 10-6 setback into the series finale on Sunday.
