BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (29-41) defeated the Birmingham Barons (27-42) by a 1-0 score in the final game of the five-game series at Regions Field on Sunday afternoon.
Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Sixto Sanchez (2-2) earned the victory by pitching six scoreless innings where he allowed five hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Birmingham left-handed starting pitcher Matt Tomshaw (2-3) took the loss, pitching six innings where he allowed one unearned run on three hits with a walk and eight strikeouts. Jacksonville left-handed relief pitcher Jeff Kinley worked a scoreless ninth to earn his second save of the year.
After the first two innings were scoreless, a Brian Miller RBI single gave Jacksonville a 1-0 lead in the top of the third, which would be the final.
After Sanchez's six innings, left-hander McKenzie Mills worked a scoreless seventh inning before Graves kept the Barons scoreless in the final two frames and Kinley locked down the save in the ninth.
The win was Jacksonville's fourth straight to gain a series victory over Birmingham to close out the first half of the 2019 Southern League season.
The Jumbo Shrimp will have the next three days off for the Southern League All-Star break. The second half of the season begins on Thursday night as the Jumbo Shrimp start a five-game series with the Pensacola Blue Wahoos at 7:05 p.m. at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
