The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp close out the first half of the season with Sunday's 4 p.m. contest at the Birmingham Barons. RHP Sixto Sanchez (1-2, 3.94 ERA) starts for the Shrimp against Barons LHP Matt Tomshaw (2-2, 2.45 ERA). Coverage begins at 3:45 p.m. on MiLB.tv, Sunny 102.3 FM and TuneIn.

JACKSONVILLE STROLLS PAST BIRMINGHAM 5-3

The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp mustered only three hits Saturday, but collected 12 walks en route to a 5-3 victory over the Birmingham Barons. In the first inning, J.C. Millan, Stone Garrett and Bryson Brigman each drew a free pass with the bases loaded. John Silviano chipped in an RBI ground out for a 4-0 lead. Luis Alexander Basabe homered in the third to get the Barons on the board. Gavin Sheets hit an RBI single and Blake Rutherford added an RBI triple to draw Birmingham within 4-3 in the fourth. The score remained that way until the ninth, when Brian Miller trotted home on a wild pitch. Tommy Eveld, Daniel Castano and Dylan Lee combined for five scoreless innings of relief.

YOU'LL NEVER WALK ALONE

Jacksonville entered play on Saturday with just 160 walks through 68 games on the season, the fewest total of the 120 teams in Minor League Baseball. The Jumbo Shrimp promptly began Saturday's game at Birmingham with five walks in the first inning, a figure they had matched or surpassed just nine times over an entire game all season. Jacksonville finished the game by accumulating 12 free passes, nearly double their previous season-high of seven on June 1 against Mobile and tied for the second-highest total of any Southern League team in a game this season. Five different Jumbo Shrimp compiled multiple walks on Saturday; Jacksonville had seen just 14 performances with multiple free passes all season in the first 68 contests of the campaign.

DEFENSE AGAINST THE DARK ARTS

In the first 51 games of the season, Jacksonville committed 40 errors, a figure that ranked in the middle of the pack in the Southern League. The Jumbo Shrimp have followed that up with just 10 miscues in the last 18 games, and the club's season total of 50 now ranks in a tie for the second-fewest in the circuit. Moreover, Jacksonville has also displayed a strong range factor as evidenced by the club's defensive efficiency, which simply measures how many batted balls put into play that are turned into outs. The Jumbo Shrimp have posted a .717 defensive efficiency, a figure that ranks second in the Southern League. In fact, Jacksonville's defensive efficiency is so strong that it would also place seventh in the major leagues.

HOT SAUCE

In the first 20 games of the season, Jacksonville starting pitchers compiled a 3-13 record and 5.44 ERA over 91.0 innings. Jumbo Shrimp lid-lifters combined for 49 walks (4.8 BB/9), 89 strikeouts (8.8 K/9) and 91 hits allowed (9.0 H/9). However, the Jumbo Shrimp have seen some stellar starting pitching over the last 49 games. During this stretch, Jacksonville starters have combined for a 2.77 ERA (88 ER in 285.2 IP). Jumbo Shrimp starters have walked 82 (2.6 BB/9), fanned 234 (7.4 K/9) and yielded 228 hits (7.2 H/9).

THOU SHALT NOT STEAL

Jumbo Shrimp catchers have been a crucial element to a strong defense throughout the 2019 season. The club's backstops have caught 40 men stealing, tied for the top spot in Double-A and tied for second in all of Minor League Baseball behind the Modesto Nuts' (High-A, Seattle Mariners) 41. Jacksonville's 43.0 percent caught stealing rate ranks fourth in Double-A. Individually, Santiago Chavez leads Double-A and places in a tie for fourth in the minors with 24 runners caught stealing in just 44 attempts (54.5 percent).

FRIENDS CLOSE, ENEMIES CLOSER

Throughout every level in the history of baseball, nearly every team can expect to go about .500 in games decided by one or two runs. However, the Jumbo Shrimp have gone a combined 12-26 (.316) in games determined by two runs or fewer, including a stunning 2-12 in contests decided by precisely two tallies. In fact, Jacksonville has lost eight of their last 13 affairs decided by no more than two runs, though the club did just win its first two two-runs game of the season in this series at Birmingham. Additionally, six of the Jumbo Shrimp's last seven games have been determined by two runs or fewer, including five in a row.

SHRIMP SKEWERS

Jacksonville has won five of their last eight games to avoid the worst half in recorded club history (2018 second half, 27-42). However, a defeat in the finale on Sunday in Birmingham would equal the most losses in a half since at least 2005... Robert Dugger, Brian Miller, Cody Poteet and Justin Twine will represent the Jumbo Shrimp in Tuesday's Southern League All-Star Game.
