Corpus Christi Hooks News Release

FRISCO, TX - Corpus Christi's struggling offense exploded for six tallies in the seventh inning Monday night. Jon Gaston provided the big blow, a three-run triple, as the Hooks rallied to split their four-game series opposite Frisco with an improbable 6-5 victory at Dr Pepper Ballpark.

Facing a scoreless streak of 18 innings and a 5-0 deficit, the Hooks' bats got off the mat in the seventh. Frisco lefty Kasey Kiker, pitching in relief of starter Ryan Tatusko, began the inning and walked the bases loaded. Brennan Garr (7-4) then entered the game for the RoughRiders and promptly issued a free pass to Michael Affronti to put Corpus Christi (8-22, 44-56) on the board at 5-1. Freddy Parejo and J.D. Martinez both followed with singles to right field, pulling the Hooks to within a pair. Tim Murphy, the third pitcher of the frame for Frisco, came on to face Gaston, who laced a triple over the bag at first to score three for a 6-5 Corpus Christi lead.

This uprising spoiled a solid outing by Tatusko. Following his six-inning performance Monday night, Tatusko has held the Hooks scoreless over 31 frames this season.

Hooks starter Jordan Lyles, trying to shrug off a four-game losing streak, fell into two-out trouble in the second. A fielding error by Affronti at short extended the inning and allowed Johnny Whittleman to reach base. Following a single by Elio Sarmiento, Renny Osuna ripped a triple into the right-field corner, staking the RoughRiders to a 2-0 lead. Marcus Lemon then singled to put the home team up by three.

Whittleman notched a two-out RBI single in the following frame, setting the stage for Osuna's lead-off home run in the fourth.

Lyles (7-8) battled back to earn the victory, yielding two earned runs off eight hits over six innings. He walked one and struck out four, tossing 98 pitches.

Jailen Peguero slammed the door on Frisco (19-11, 57-42), facing 10 batters in three shutout innings to earn his second save of the season. Peguero fanned four without issuing a walk, throwing 28 of his 35 pitches for strikes.

Parejo, 3-for-5 on the night, extended his hitting streak to 11 games. J.B. Shuck's club-best hit parade was snapped at 12 after going 0-for-3 with two walks.

The Hooks now head to San Antonio for a three-game series against the Missions. Lefties Douglas Arguello (6-8) and Nathan Culp (1-6) meet in the opener Tuesday night.
