Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons (15-16) surged back from a three-run deficit, hanging six runs on the board in the eighth en route to a 9-6 win over the Pensacola Wahoos (13-18) Monday night at Regions Field.
- Moments That Mattered: Seby Zavala gave the Barons a taste of the lead in the fifth inning, launching his team and league-leading seventh homer 379 feet over left field for a 3-2 Birmingham advantage.
- Turning Points: After the Blue Wahoos hung three-runs in the seventh frame, Birmingham barreled back behind a three-run blast off the bat of Danny Mendick for a 7-6 lead, while Zack Collins added some insurance with a two-run shot two batters later.
- By the Numbers: Southern League Player of the Week Eloy Jimenez continued to make his presence felt at the plate, recording his seventh-straight multiple hit game with a single in the first and a double in the third. The two- bagger drove Tito Polo in to score, marking Jimenez's 20th RBI since joining the team on April 19.
- Facts and Figures: Zavala, Mendick and Collins re-ignited Birmingham's powerful artillery barrage, combining for three homers in the contest to move the Barons to 35 home runs on the season. Polo is now the outright leader in stolen bases among his SL counterparts, stealing his 10th bag this season in the third. Collins also drew his 30th walk, tying for the most among all minor leaguers while extending his on-base streak to 13 consecutive games after reaching on every plate appearance.
- Up Next: The Barons take on the Blue Wahoos in the second game of their home series Tuesday night at Regions Field with first pitch set for 7:05 p.m. Right-Hander Spencer Adams (1-3, 7.56 ERA) will toe the rubber against righty Keury Mella (3-0, 0.84 ERA). Curt Bloom will have the call on 960 WERC News Radio and the iHeart Radio app.
