Six Different Otters Score as Erie Snaps Kitchener Streak in 6-3 Win

October 28, 2022 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Erie Otters News Release

Kitchener, Ontario - Coming up the jubilant rush of a statement 3-1 win over the then-#1 Owen Sound Attack on Saturday night, the new weekend of three-in-three started for the Erie Otters on Friday night. Erie would take the intradivision trip to Kitchener, Ontario to battle one of the hottest teams in the league, the Kitchener Rangers. After an 0-5 start, four straight dominant wins had pushed the Rangers to near .500. With Montreal Canadiens prospect Filip Mesar out with flu-like symptoms, the Otters would hope that luck - and recent success - would be on their side; especially with the return of Goaltender and Columbus Blue Jackets' prospect Nolan Lalonde for the team.

In one of the most impressive opening periods for the Otters in years, Erie would outshoot Kitchener 21-11 in the first 20 minutes. More importantly, Erie would strike for three goals while allowing none from the Rangers. Scoring would start just :72 in from Brett Bressette (5) to take a 1-0 lead. 7:41 later, Spencer Sova (3) - much like Bressette - would grab goals in back-to-back games with arguably the easiest goal of his career thanks to a perfect feed from Kaleb Smith. Erie jumped to a 2-0 lead not even 10 minutes in. After a successful kill, Erie would continue to put pedal to the medal. As the period would come to an end, the Otters would once again go on the kill - for seven seconds. Cameron Morton would be tripped on a prospective breakaway opportunity, and force four-on-four. With less than four seconds remaining, Morton would feed Elias Cohen (5) for a breakaway through the five hole, and the Otters dominant period would finally come to an end with a 3-0 lead.

A prospective script-flipping moment took place just :15 into the second period, as Mitchell Martin (5) would get the Rangers on the board to make it 3-1 with most of the game left. However, the Rangers would find just five shots in the ensuing 15 minutes as the game would stay 3-1. With kills coming from either side during the span, it would be Erie who would grab the next goal, as Colby Saganiuk (1) would finally grab his first goal of the season to give Erie a 4-1 lead 15:51 into the second period. 1:50 later, the Rangers would strike on the power play from Carson Rehkopf (5) to make it a two-goal game after 40 minutes of play, Erie ahead 4-2. Kitchener would outshoot Erie 11-8 in the period, but Erie would maintain a 29-22 shot advantage.

The third period would see Erie set a new season-high for goals in a game, as Bruce McDonald (2) and Malcolm Spence (4) would add another pair of rookie goals to give Erie a six-goal night. The Kitchener Rangers would add a goal 17:38 into the frame by Francesco Pinelli (9) to make it a three goal final, but Erie would dominate in every facet enroute to a 6-3 victory. The Otters would outshoot the Rangers 45-32, as Nolan Lalonde would pick up the win in his return. Kitchener's four-game winning streak comes to an end, as the team falls to 4-6. Erie jumps above .500 for the first time this season at 5-4-0-2. Erie has won back-to-back games in regulation for the first time this season, and moves to 3-1 in the Midwest Division.

A pair of home games await the Otters as they close out the first full month of hockey in the OHL. The Western Conference's #1 team, the Windsor Spitfires, pull into Erie for a Saturday night showdown, before Kitchener returns the favor to the Otters by traveling to NWPA on Sunday afternoon. Erie will host its (and the OHL's) 2nd Annual Charity Sock Toss on Saturday night, with all collected socks being donated to the Erie City Mission.
