El Paso Diablos News Release

The Sioux Falls Canaries win their second straight over El Paso 3-2 in 12 innings from Sioux Falls Stadium on Saturday night.

The Canaries pieced together one run in the bottom of the second inning off of Garvis Romero. Ben Van Iderstine and Matt Imwalle had back-to-back one out singles. Two batters later Jake Smith walked to load the bases. Damon Lessler than grounded a ball to second which Jorge Alvarez under-threw to first base which scored Van Iderstine for the lone run of the inning. Romero then induced Coughlan into a fly out to end the bases loaded jam.

The Diablos took the lead in the top of the fifth. Matt Kent led things off with a towering solo-home run to right field. Evan Conley, Casey Clary, and Albenis Machado then each singled loading the bases. Kory Drew then hit a sacrifice fly to center field which plated Clary for the second run. The Diablos would take a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the fifth inning.

The Sioux Falls Canaries answered promptly with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Abner Arroyo blasted an RBI double to deep left field knotting up the game at two.

Sioux Falls won the game in the bottom of the twelfth inning. Julio Frietas hit the first batter Damon Lessler on the first pitch putting the winning run aboard. Frietas was then pulled from the game due to an injury and Mike Cervera replaced him. Cameron Coughlan dropped down a sac bunt to move Lessler into scoring position at second base. The Diablos would intentionally walk Abner Arroyo, but on the second pitch Mike Cervera threw a ball to the back stop which moved Lessler to third base. The next at-bat Will Quintana hit a ground ball deep down the third base line, Evan Conley gloved it but his throw to first base was errant which allowed Lessler to score for the victory.

The Diablos stranded six runners over the games final six innings and 13 overall. El Paso has lost six of their last seven games, six of them by one run.

Garvis Romero threw five innings allowing just one earned run off of seven hits with one walk and two strikeouts.

Michah Posey worked six full allowing only two runs off of eight hits with one walk and three strikeouts.

Justin Knoff and Dustin Cameron combined for five shut-out innings of relief work.

Lenny Bays (5-0) gets the victory as he threw a scoreless top of the 12th inning.

Julio Frietas picks up the loss (0-1) as he lasted one inning allowing one run.

The Diablos will close out their six game road trip on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 PM MST against Sioux Falls. Andy Torres will get the start against Jeff Landing. The game will be broadcast live at www.diablos.com with Jon Barr on the call.
