
Fonseca's Slam Helps Saints Win Sixth Straight

ST. PAUL, MN (June 23, 2007) - The St. Paul Saints went 38 contests without a multi-homer game from a player and now they have two in two nights as Alex Fonseca clubbed two homers as the Saints cruised to an 11-1 victory, their sixth straight, on Saturday night at Midway Stadium in front of 6,908.
The fireworks started in the fourth when, with two outs and a man at first, Adam Bourassa singled and Skip Adams walked to load the bases. Fonseca drilled the first pitch over the left field wall, for a grand slam, his second homer of the season.
The Saints added three more in the fifth as Scooter Jordan led it off with a walk. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Ben Thomas. Brent Krause's infield single to short, put runners at the corners. Marcel Longmire's infield single scored Jordan and Chad Sosebee's throw to first on the play got away allowing Krause to score and Longmire to go to third. Longmire extended his hitting streak to 15 games, going 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Brian Sprout added an RBI single to make it 7-1
Fonseca came calling again in the sixth after Adams led off with a single, Fonseca clubbed his second homer of the night over the left field wall. Fonseca finished the night 2-3 with two homers, six RBI and two runs scored.
Saints starter Brian Whinnery, working on three days rest, hurled 7.0 innings allowing one unearned run on six hits while walking two and striking out three to pick up his third win of the season.
The same two teams meet in the finale on Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Saints send RHP Charlie Ruud (4-2, 4.30) to the hill against Blacksnakes RHP Dustin Bolton (1-2, 4.70). The game can be seen on FSN North and there is no radio, but the game can be heard via the Saints internet at saintsbaseball.com. It is a Tribute to Jackie Hernandez presented by 1919 Root Beer.
