Sioux City Stops Hawks 3-1

The Sioux City Musketeers topped the Waterloo Black Hawks 3-1 Saturday at Tyson Events Center after the teams played more than 51 of the game's 60 minutes with an even score.

It took the Hawks 19:44 to cap a good first period with the first goal of the night. Just 16 seconds before intermission, Owen Baker pounced on the rebound of James Hong's shot, rifling the puck into the net from close range.

Sioux City tied it again with the only goal of the second period at 4:57. Owen Fowler received a drop pass in the left circle and beat Emmett Croteau with a shot to the short side.

Later in the second, the Hawks were turned away on a four-minute power play, then both teams were denied in special teams sequences early in the third.

Only 3:40 remained when the Musketeers had the decisive breakthrough. Ben Doran kept the puck alive just above the crease, poking it to Ben Steeves coming from behind the net. Steeves scored into an open side, ultimately notching his seventh game-winning goal of the season. Nick Pierre added a lunging empty net goal at 18:18 to put the game out of reach.

Sioux City outshot the Hawks 12-7 in the third period, with each team ending the night at 25 total shots.

The Hawks meet the other USHL club from the Siouxland on Friday at Young Arena, hosting the Sioux Falls Stampede for a 7:05 p.m. matchup.
