Madison Capitols News Release

Madison, WI - The Madison Capitols (21-21-11) could not defend a second period burst from the Sioux City Musketeers (34-16-5), and the visitors skated off with a 6-0 win on Saturday inside the Alliant Energy Center.

Despite having already clinched a playoff berth on Friday, Sioux City showed no signs of mercy in the early going on Saturday, proving why they were a +21 in first periods in terms of goal differential. Garrett Metcalf kept the Capitols in the game, denying 15 of 16 Sioux City shots in the opening 20 minutes.

The Capitols were only whistled for a penalty once, but that was al it took for the Musketeers to strike for a 54th time this season on the man advantage. Robert Carpenter fielded a bouncing puck between the circles and then grabbed his own rebound to beat Metcalf at 14:15. The Boston University commit picked up his league-best 31st goal and 12th on the power play to give Sioux City the 1-0 edge.

On paper, the second period looked like a steady improvement for Madison, as the Capitols outshot the Musketeers 11-5 in the middle frame. However, Sioux City was the opportunistic team, tallying three times on those five shots at the frame.

In the first 2:51 of the period, Adam Johnson picked up his 30th of the season at just the 40-second mark. Then Max Kalter was able to fire one off of Metcalf and over the goaltenders' outstretched hand on a high-arching rebound.

Following the Kalter tally, Darren Smith entered the goal in replacing Metcalf but did not fare much better, as with just seven ticks left on the clock, Jake Ryczek flipped a power play wrist shot through bodies and past Smith to push the Sioux City lead to 4-0 through two periods.

Smith made some highlight reel saves in the third, including a sprawling save on Walker Duehr as he went to the splits. However, it would not be enough, and Sioux City added two final tallies off the sticks of Joe Snively and Alex Payusov.

The game ended with wild scrums involving a number of players on both sides. Multiple players on each side received an early trip to the showers. By night's end, the two teams had combined for well over 100 penalty minutes.

Madison hits the road for games on Friday and Saturday in Dubuque and Chicago, respectively, before returning home on Sunday, March 29 to host the Fighting Saints at 3 p.m. at the Coliseum.
