Sioux Falls Stampede News Release

Bensenville, IL - The Sioux Falls Stampede rallied from 3-1 and 5-3 deficits and scored four unanswered goals in the third period to down the Chicago Steel 7-5 Saturday night at the Edge Ice Arena. Dakota Joshua led the way with two goals and an assist while Stefanos Lekkas earned the win in goal with 21 saves. The win increased the Stampede's lead over Des Moines for the final playoff spot in the West to six points with seven games remaining in the season. The win also ended the Herd's season long 10-game road swing in which they finished with a 5-5-0 record and are now 28-20-5 overall.

Chicago was the more well rested team coming into the game having not played the night before and it showed as the Steel grabbed the first two goals of the game. The first came 5:19 into the game when Tanner Laczynski knocked home a rebound to give the Steel a 1-0 edge. Connor Murphy wristed a shot that was stopped by Stampede goaltender Stefanos Lekkas, but the rebound bounced right to the stick of Laczynski who knocked it into the empty net. The Steel extended their lead to 2-0 at 11:58 when Carson Vance wristed a shot into the upper right hand corner of the net. Sioux Falls would get on the board at 18:07 on a shorthanded goal from Dakota Joshua. Joshua took the puck at center ice and broke in the Steel zone and around the lone defender before being hauled down onto the ice, but the puck slipped through the pads of Chicago goaltender Trevor Gorsuch and into the net to make it a 2-1 game. Chicago outshot the Herd 13-5 in the period.

In the second, the Steel regained their two-goal edge when Ryan Blankemeier one-timed a pass in front of the net to give Chicago a 3-1 advantage. The Stampede responded just over a minute later when Collin Peters tallied his fourth goal of the season. Joey Raats brought the puck down the right wing boards and found Peters on the back door who one-timed the puck into the upper right hand corner of the net. It stayed that way until 12:42 when the back door play worked again, this time it was Troy Loggins sending a pass to JM Piotroski who snuck past the Chicago defense down the left wing boards and put it into the back of the net to tie the game 3-3. Just it appeared the Stampede had stolen the momentum of the game, Chicago regained the lead at 17:06 on a power play goal from JD Dudek who blasted a shot from the right circle perfectly into the upper left hand corner of the net, past the stick side of Lekkas. Chicago would take that lead into the locker room, despite being outshot 12-6 in the period.

Things didn't good look for the Herd early in the third when Marcel Godbout scored to extend the Chicago lead to 5-3 just 4:56 into the period. Sioux Falls began their amazing comeback just four minutes later when Dakota Joshua scored on the power play. His goal was followed by a goal from Parker Tuomie just 12 seconds later. Clint Lewis sent a perfect pass from the left wing corner to Tumoie who quickly ripped the puck into the back of the net and the game was tied 5-5. Sioux Falls took their first lead of the night at 15:20 when Cooper Marody tallied his 17th goal of the season. Logan O'Connor took the puck behind the Chicago net and found Marody open in front who then backhanded a shot through the pads of Gorsuch to give the Herd a 6-5 lead. The Herd sealed the game just 48 seconds later when Mikey Eyssimont tallied his first goal as a member of the Stampede, wristing a shot from the left circle into the net and the Herd completed their comeback with a 7-5 win.

Sioux Falls outshot the Steel 11-7 in the third and 28-26 on the night, going 1-for-4 on the power play while Chicago is 1-for-3. It marked just the second time all season the Stampede won a game in which they trailed after two periods.
