Muskegon Lumberjacks News Release
GREEN BAY, Wisconsin - The Muskegon Lumberjacks concluded their season-long six-game road swing with the backend of a two-game weekend series against the Green Bay Gamblers tonight at the Green Bay Resch Center looking for the weekend and regular season series sweep against the Eastern Conference rival. In another close-knit affair, the Lumberjacks used a two-goal third period courtesy of goals scored by former Green Bay teammates Ryan Siroky and Christian Wolanin to erase a 1-1 tie through two periods and come away with a 3-1 victory over the Gamblers. With the victory, Muskegon picked up its 31st victory overall that ties a USHL team record for wins totaled in a single regular season originally set during the 2012-13 campaign.
The first period featured a scoreless frame until the final minutes when the Lumberjacks (31-18-4, 66 points) grabbed an early 1-0 lead with 2:02 left as a Green Bay turnover deep in their own zone led to Max Humitz feeding an open Robbie DeMontis in the high slot, and the Yale commit roofed his sixth marker of the season over the glove hand of Jason Pawloski (8-19-5).
Muskegon took its one goal lead into the first intermission break while also outshooting Green Bay through the opening 20 minutes of regulation by a 12-5 margin.
As the game steered towards the halfway point, the Gamblers (16-30-7, 39 points) found the equalizer at 1-1 by the 10:10 mark of the second period as a three-on-two odd man rush led to Derek Barach burying his 11th of the season in the high slot inside the far right post and past Eric Schierhorn (23-12-4). Ryan Tait and Grant Frederic assisted on the goal.
The tie game remained the same heading into the second intermission with the Lumberjacks expanding their shots on goal advantage to a 27-13 spread after outshooting the Gamblers during the middle stanza, 15-8.
Just past the midway point of the third, Muskegon snatched its lead back at 2-1 with 9:01 left in regulation taking advantage of their second power play opportunity of the evening courtesy of Siroky stuffing home his third as a Lumberjack and 13th on the season past an outstretched Pawloski in the low slots. DeMontis and Trevor Hamilton helped set up the man advantage marker.
The visitors continued to hold on to the lead going into the final moments of regulation when Green Bay eventually pulled Pawloski for the extra attacker with just under a minute left. Ultimately, Muskegon sealed the deal on the road potting an empty net unassisted tally from Wolanin with under 20 seconds to go for his 12th goal on the season. Muskegon outshot Green Bay for the game, 38-25.
Eric Schierhorn earned his 23rd win of the season for Muskegon following a 24-save effort, while Jason Pawloski took the home loss for Green Bay stopping 35 of 37 shots faced. Robbie DeMontis led the Lumberjacks' offensive attack with a goal, his 10th career USHL tally, plus one assist and was the only player on both sides that amassed more than one point on the stat sheet. Muskegon was 1-for-2 on the power play, while Green Bay finished the game 0-for-4. The Lumberjacks end the six-game road trip with a 4-1-1 record and sweep the regular season series against the Gamblers posting a perfect 4-0-0 record.
