Southern Maryland Blue Crabs News Release

Waldorf, MD - The Blue Crabs moved back into first place by a half-game with a 4-2 win over the Ducks in a five-inning, rain-shortened game on Wedensday night at Regency Furniture Stadium. The win extended Southern Maryland's streak to five, a season-high.

One night after shutting out the Ducks on three hits, the Blue Crabs had to come back after a two-run, first-inning homer by shortstop Javier Colina (1) gave the Ducks a 2-0 lead.

Things stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth where with rain moving in, the Blue Crabs exploded for four runs on three hits. Third baseman Travis Garcia led off the inning with a single, then moved to third on a throwing error by Colina on an attempted fielder's choice off the bat of catcher Christian Lopez.

That's when first baseman Ryan Mulhern provided the big blow; a three-run homer to give Southern Maryland a 3-2 lead. The round- tripper was Mulhern's fifth of the season and gave him four homers and 13 RBI over his last five games.

The scoring concluded on a two-out RBI triple from leftfielder Casey Benjamin to give Southern Maryland the 4-2 win.

With rain coming down in buckets, the game was stopped after the fifth inning and called about 30 minutes later at 10:00 p.m.

Getting the win in relief for the Blue Crabs was Virgil Vasquez (2-0) who pitched two perfect innings while striking out four. He came on in relief of Michael Schlact, who struggled through the first three innings, but kept the Blue Crabs in the ballgame by getting third baseman Matt Padgett to fly out to left to leave the bases loaded in the third inning.

The loss fell to starter Joselo Diaz (1-1) who went the distance, but gave up all four runs, two of them earned, on five hits and struck out five.

The Blue Crabs take on the Ducks in the finale of their three-game series tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. from Regency Furniture Stadium. Right-hander Nick Green (2-1, 7.91 ERA) will go for Southern Maryland against lefty Heath Phillips (1-1, 4.96 ERA) of Long Island. Tickets are still available and can be purchased at the box office, at www.somdbluecrabs.com, or by calling (301) 638-9788.
