Silviano to Jacksonville; Newell to Disabled List

August 8, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The Miami Marlins announced a pair of transactions that impact their Double-A affiliate Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp roster prior to tonight's game against the Mississippi Braves at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville at 7:05 p.m.

Right-handed relief pitcher Ryan Newell has been placed on the disabled list, retroactive to Monday August 8. Newell has pitched in nine games for the Jumbo Shrimp, with no wins or losses and a 2.70 ERA in his 10 innings of work.

In a corresponding move, infielder John Silviano has been transferred from the High-A Jupiter Hammerheads to Jacksonville. Silviano with the GCL Marlins recently completed a minor league rehab assignment, hitting .125 (2-for-16) with a home run and two runs batted in in five games. Silviano started the season with High-A Jupiter, where in 65 games was hitting .281 with 12 home runs and 39 runs batted in before he was placed on Jupiter's disabled list on June 26.

This is the first call-up to the Double-A level in Silviano's career. Silviano, 24, was originally selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 13th round of the 2012 draft and played in Toronto's system until 2016 when he was released. He was signed by the Marlins as a minor league free agent in 2016 and spent all of last season with High-A Jupiter.

The Jumbo Shrimp roster stands at 25 active players, and a revised roster is attached.

The Jumbo Shrimp return home on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 7:05 p.m. against the Mississippi Braves. Gates open at 6 p.m. for Publix Corks & Forks Wednesday, when fans can purchase a game ticket and the opportunity to sample food, beer, and wine from Publix in the Safe Harbor Seafood Palm Tree Pavilion for $15 at tinyurl.com/jaxshrimpportal (password "PUBLIX"). Reserved tickets may be upgraded at the Pavilion or box office. That night's featured wine will also be available in your neighborhood Publix. Anyone who donates a canned food item at the box office can save $1 off a gameday ticket (limit $1 off per ticket).
