Smokies Scatter Shuckers Hits in 6-1 Win

KODAK, TN - After scoring in the first inning, the Biloxi Shuckers (65-50, 24-21) were held off the board the rest of the night in a 6-1 defeat against the Tennessee Smokies (57-57, 21-23) on Wednesday night at Smokies Stadium.

One swing of the stick did the scoring for the Shuckers in the first. Corey Ray popped a ball up in foul territory on the third base side that Jesse Hodges dropped, giving Ray new life. The Shuckers centerfielder launched the next pitch from RHP Matt Swarmer (W, 3-3) onto the right field berm, his 24th homer of the season, to give Biloxi a quick 1-0 advantage. It is the eighth time this season Ray has led off a game with a home run.

Tennessee went in front in the bottom of the first thanks to the long ball. Zack Short singled against RHP Marcos Diplan (L, 1-3) bringing up Vimael Machin, who homered to right field, his fifth of the season, giving the Smokies a 2-1 edge. Connor Myers added an inside-the-park home run in the third to put Tennessee in front 3-0.

In the fifth, the top of the Smokies lineup strung together four consecutive hits to score three runs more against Diplan, chasing him from the game after 4.1 innings of work. RHP Miguel Sanchez entered the game and need just one pitch to get out of the frame, forcing a 5-3 double play. Sanchez would not allow a hit in 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, striking out a season-high six batters.

The Shuckers managed a hit in five of their six innings against Swarmer but never strung them together to generate another run. RHP Scott Effross spun two scoreless innings of relief for the Smokies and RHP Daury Torrez finished the game off with a scoreless ninth.

Biloxi returns to action against the Smokies on Thursday night at 6:05 PM CT. RHP Conor Harber is set to make his Double-A debut against Smokies RHP Thomas Hatch (6-4, 3.82). The game can be heard locally on Cruisin' WGCM AM 1240/FM 100.9, TuneIn Radio or the MiLB First Pitch App.
