PORTLAND, OR - Kohl Bauml scored twice in the third period and Austin Lotz stopped 55 shots as the Everett Silvertips shocked the top-seeded Portland Winterhawks with a 4-3 victory in Game 1 of their first-round WHL playoff series Friday night at the Rose Garden. After snapping a ten-game playoff losing streak with their first win in Portland since 2010, the Silvertips take a 1-0 series lead into Game 2 Saturday night at the Rose Garden.
Everett scored twice in the second period to take a lead they wouldn't relinquish, getting stellar goaltending from Lotz (1-0) in his first career playoff start to complete the win. In addition to Bauml's two scores, Carson Stadnyk and Josh Winquist also found the net as the Silvertips defeated the Winterhawks for just the second time this season with 12 Everett players making their playoff debuts.
The shot count stayed even in the opening minutes before Portland grabbed the momentum with a pair of powerplay chances. Everett killed off the first Winterhawks chance, but Chase De Leo opened the scoring on the second. After three straight Lotz saves in one sequence, another loose puck came free beside the net with De Leo there to bang it in. The 'Hawks outshot the 'Tips 22-9 in the first period and led 1-0 after one.
Everett countered early in the second period as Carson Stadnyk skated down the right boards and cut to the net, where the defenseman caused a collision with goaltender Mac Carruth as the puck crept over the goal line to tie the game. The Silvertips killed off a third Portland powerplay to keep things even at one late in the period when Tyler Sandhu grabbed a loose puck in the offensive zone. Sandhu circled the net before dishing to the high slot for Josh Winquist, who one-timed a perfect shot inside the far post to give the 'Tips their first lead at 2-1 after two periods.
As a Silvertips powerplay expired early in the third period, Ty Mappin sent a pass in front to Bauml. Standing just outside the goal crease, Bauml roofed a backhand shot over Carruth and under the crossbar to give Everett a 3-1 lead. Lotz helped preserve that lead with a highlight-reel stop, diving across the crease to his right to rob Taylor Leier of a goal a few minutes later. The Winterhawks came in waves near the midway point of the third until Ty Rattie snapped home a great feed from Brendan Leipsic to pull Portland within two at 9:37.
The 'Tips re-gained the two-goal edge three minutes later on a great rush as Ben Betker and Dawson Leedahl combined to feed Reid Petryk on the rush. Petryk slipped a pass through the defense to Bauml, who beat Carruth blocker-side from between the circles to make it 4-2 Everett. The Winterhawks continued to pressure for the remainder of the game, pulling Carruth and drawing back within one on Nic Petan's powerplay goal with 16 seconds remaining before time expired in a 4-3 Silvertips victory.
Lotz' 55 saves were the second-highest single-game total in his career, trailing on his 65-save effort on January 23 at Kamloops. Mac Carruth (0-1) stopped 27 shots for the Winterhawks, who outshot the 'Tips 58-31 in total. Everett went 0 for 2 on the powerplay in the contest, while Portland finished 2 for 4.
The Silvertips and Winterhawks will get right back at it with Game 2 of the best-of-seven series coming up Saturday night at the Rose Garden. Opening faceoff is once again set for 7:00 pm, with pregame broadcast coverage starting at 6:30 on Fox Sports 1380 AM. Everett will then host Games 3 and 4 of the series at Comcast Arena on Wednesday Friday of next week.
