Everett Silvertips News Release
KELOWNA, BC - The Everett Silvertips grabbed an early lead and never relinquished it on their way to a 3-2 victory over the Kelowna Rockets Wednesday night at Prospera Place. In addition to snapping a 13-game road losing skid, the Silvertips have also now won twice and earned points in three of their last four games.
Kohl Bauml put up a goal and an assist in the victory, while Manraj Hayer scored for the first time this season and Nick Walters netted the game-winner. Kent Simpson totaled 34 saves on the night, including a few key stops late in regulation to preserve the victory.
Unlike Sunday's meeting between the teams, Everett was outshot in the first period but found the back of the net twice. The 'Tips opened the scoring when Josh Winquist and Josh Birkholz helped Manny Hayer spring past the Kelowna defense on a breakaway, where he beat Adam Brown stick side at 7:39. A powerplay goal late in the period extended the Silvertips' lead as Ryan Murray fed a pass in front to Kohl Bauml, who snuck the puck through Brown's five-hole and just over the goal line to send Everett to the locker room with a two-goal edge.
Adam Brown almost single-handed kept the Rockets from falling further behind in the second frame, stopping Josh Winquist on a penalty shot, Josh Birkholz on a breakaway and Ryan Murray on a great shorthanded chance in front at various points during the period. Kelowna then made it 2-1 in the final minute of the stanza, converting a 5-on-3 powerplay chance with Colton Sissons' goal at 19:19.
Just after the end of a Silvertips powerplay to start the third, Nick Walters lit the lamp with a long shot from the left point to give Everett a 3-1 lead at the 2:05 mark. The Rockets again made it a one-goal game midway through the period when Shane McColgan snuck a wrister past Simpson off the rush. The 'Tips then killed off a late powerplay and stopped a number of Kelowna chances in the closing minutes to close out the 3-2 victory.
Kent Simpson (7-22-1-5) allowed only the two goals on 36 shots in the win as Everett was outshot 36-23 for the night. Adam Brown (14-18-0-1) made a number of impressive stops among his 20 saves in the loss. The Silvertips were 1 for 3 on the powerplay while allowing just one goal on seven opportunities for Kelowna.
Next up for the Silvertips is a visit to Vancouver, BC, where they will face the Giants Friday night at 7:30 pm. Pregame radio coverage starts at 7:00 pm on Fox Sports 1380 AM. The 'Tips will then return to Comcast Arena for a rivalry matchup with the Seattle Thunderbirds in front of a near-sellout crowd Saturday night at 7:05 pm.
