Silvertips Shutout Chiefs for First Win
October 4, 2007 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Everett Silvertips News Release
The Everett Silvertips won their first game of the John Becanic era Wednesday night, using a stellar performance from Leland Irving and a circus goal from Kyle Beach as they defeated the Spokane Chiefs 4-0 at Comcast Arena at Everett Events Center. Zach Hamill added a shorthanded goal and two assists as the 'Tips look to continue to rebound from their shaky start as the season progresses with a home and home series with the Portland Winter Hawks beginning on Friday night. After a scoreless first period, Kyle Beach opened up the scoring with a phenomenal power play goal at 1:24 of the second that conjured up memories of Mike Legg's goal for the University of Michigan against the Minnesota Golden Gophers in the winter of 1996. With Beach behind the net and Spokane goalie Dustin Tokarski covering the crease down low, Beach picked the puck up with his stick blade, spun around, and with a Chief defender fast on his trail, flipped the puck into the upper reaches of the net for a goal that will be talked about by Silvertips fans for years to come. It was Beach's fifth of the season to lead the team and was able to get Everett going as the stunned Chiefs were never really able to recover.
Shane Harper continued the scoring two minutes and forty seconds later by taking a cross-crease feed from Jordan Mistelbacher and roofing one past Tokarski to give the 'Tips their first two-goal lead of the season.
Thirty seconds after a tripping penalty on Zack Dailey towards the end of the second period, Zach Hamill intercepted a pass on the Spokane power play and skated in all alone, stickhandling and backhanding a shot between Tokarski's pads to give the 'Tips a 3-0 lead at the 14:23 mark. Hamill's goal, his first of the season, was also the first Everett shorthanded tally of the year.
Lukas Vartovnik continued his steady maturation by banging in his third goal of the year, taking a great pass from Kyle Beach across the crease and beating Tokarski once again.
Comcast Arena at Everett Events Center was silenced midway through the third period in a scary moment as Dailey withstood a hard hit from Spokane forward Justin Falk and was unable to leave the ice under his own power. After briefly losing consciousness, Dailey was helped onto a stretcher by emergency personnel and carted onto an ambulance as "Dai-ley! Dai-ley!" was chanted by the 4,179 in attendance. Following the game, Dailey was conscious and receptive, and will be evaluated thoroughly as the night possesses. For the hit, Falk was assessed a five minute charging major and a game misconduct in addition to a five minute fighting major as Beach came to Dailey's aid and engaged Falk.
Irving stood on his head from the start of the game to the finish, stopping Spokane leading scorer Drayson Bowman on a breakaway in the first period and showing the focus to make glove saves on two separate redirected pucks in the third.
