Silver Sluggers in the Stands and on the Field at Old-Timers' Game

(Waldorf, Md.): Silver Sluggers Club members are invited to watch their contemporaries play softball when the Blue Crabs host their first-ever Old-Timers' Game at Regency Furniture Stadium on Tuesday, September 14, the final Silver Sluggers Night of 2010.

Before the Blue Crabs go up against the Bridgeport Bluefish at 7:05 p.m., the St. Mary's Senior League, sponsored by the St. Mary's County Department of Aging, will compete in a three inning, slow pitch softball game from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Participants will include an 86 year old, a 79 year old, and many others 65 and older. The game will be followed by a 15 minute Home Run Derby featuring the hardest hitters the league has to offer.

Gates will open to the public at 5:30 p.m., and Silver Sluggers, as well as all ticket holders can come watch the Old-Timers' Game and Home Run Derby for no additional charge.

"One of my hopes is that some of the Silver Sluggers at the game will want to sign up," league member Ernie Bell said. "Our league is really laid back and a lot of fun. We just enjoy playing ball."

The St. Mary's Senior League plays throughout Southern Maryland during the summer, and will participate in the Maryland Senior Olympics from September 10-12 in Olney before coming to Regency Furniture Stadium.

"A lot of the guys in the league played in high school and college," Bell said. "We pick up a couple of guys every year, and I am quite pleased with how it has progressed."

"They believe and display that you don't get too old to play," fellow league member Bill Jenkins added.

While most of the players are from Charles, St. Mary's and Calvert counties, seniors from across the region are welcome to join.

Come out to Regency Furniture Stadium and see older active residents of Southern Maryland play ball. Regency Furniture Stadium is located at 11765 St. Linus Drive in Waldorf, MD.
