Sidewinders shutout again

April 16, 2008 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Tucson Sidewinders News Release

Sacramento, CA - Dan Meyer tossed six scoreless innings and two relievers completed the shutout as the Sacramento Rivercats blanked the Sidewinders 3-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Raley Field. It is the second straight shutout loss for Tucson and drops the Sidewinders record to 2-12.

Meyer did not allow a hit in his six innings and allowed just two baserunners on walks. He struck out five before being lifted due to a pitch count.

Tucson threatened to score just once in the game but was denied by a familiar face. With two out and a runner at second in the sixth, Tim Raines, Jr. drilled a line drive to the gap in right center. Former Sidewinder Carlos Gonzalez made a tremendous leaping grab and held on as he rolled into a summersault to rob Raines of extra bases.

Evan MacLane worked five innings and allowed three runs on nine hits in his second start of the year. MacLane (0-2) gave up a solo home run to Brooks Conrad in the first, an RBI groundout to Justin Knoedler in the second and an RBI base hit to Gonzalez in the fifth.

The Sidewinders offense has struggled mightily in two games against Sacramento collecting just six hits combined. Tucson has yet to advance a runner to third in the series and over the final four and two-thirds innings of last night's game and the first two innings of today's game, 20 Sidewinder hitters in a row were retired.

The Sidewinders and Rivercats play game three of their series tomorrow night at Raley Field. Right-hander Max Scherzer starts for Tucson against left-hander Gio Gonzalez for Sacramento. First pitch is at 7:05. The game will air live on COOL 1450 beginning at 6:55.
