June 15, 2023 - Southern League (SL)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release
MONTGOMERY, AL - The Biloxi Shuckers (31-28) used their seventh shutout of the year to defeat the Montgomery Biscuits (28-31), 6-0, at Riverwalk Stadium on Thursday night. The win was the third straight for the Shuckers, their longest win streak since they won five straight between May 7 and 12. The Shuckers now sit six games behind the Pensacola Blue Wahoos for first place in the Southern League South Division with 10 games remaining in the first half
Shuckers' starter Carlos Rodriguez started the game strong, retiring the first six batters he faced, including two strikeouts. In the third, the Shuckers tallied their first run of the night when Tyler Black doubled home Jackson Chourio with a double to left-center. The double extended Black's franchise record and longest active on-base streak in Minor League Baseball to 34 consecutive games. An inning later, the Shuckers tallied three more thanks to Isaac Collins' two-RBI single and a wild pitch that scored Ethan Murray.
Leading 4-0, the Shuckers turned things over to the bullpen. Ryan Middendorf, making his first Double-A appearance since being transferred to Biloxi on Wednesday, tossed 1.2 scoreless innings, stranding two inherited runners and retiring five of the six batters faced.
In the fifth, the Shuckers extended the lead to 5-0 after a solo home run by Black. Later in the inning, Carlos Rodriguez brought home Wes Clarke with a sacrifice fly to right with the bases loaded to make it 6-0.
In the sixth, James Meeker entered for Biloxi. Over the final four innings, he struck out a career-high eight and retired 12 of the 13 batters he faced. The righty also retired five straight on strikeouts between the sixth and seventh innings. In the ninth, he finished the game with back-to-back strikeouts after a single, Montgomery's second of the game, to secure the 6-0 win.
Meeker (3-2) earned the win while Cole Wilcox (0-6) took the loss for Montgomery.
The Shuckers and Biscuits will meet tomorrow for a doubleheader at Riverwalk Stadium to make up Wednesday's postponement. Game one is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. Game two is scheduled to begin 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one.
