Knoxville Smokies News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (45-40, 8-8) fell to the Biloxi Shuckers (39-44, 5-11) 5-3 Friday night at Smokies Stadium. The Shuckers' pitching staff held the Smokies to their lowest hit (5) and run (3) total of the series to keep a series-split possible.
RHP Noah Zavolas started for the Shuckers and struck out seven Smokies in 4.2 innings of work, though he did allow three earned runs. Nash Walters (W, 5-1) earned the win in relief, but it was Carlos Luna that worked four shutout innings to keep the Smokies quiet. First baseman Matt Mervis did the most damage for the Smokies with a two-run homer in the first, his 14th of the season. Mervis now has 49 RBIs with the Smokies and 78 total between Single-A and Double-A in 2022.
RHP Peyton Remy (L, 5-3) took the loss despite tying his season-high with six innings of work. He surrendered seven hits and five runs. Bailey Horn and Nicholas Padilla were terrific out of the bullpen for Tennessee, combining for three scoreless frames to keep the Smokies within striking distance, but they couldn't capitalize in the bottom of the ninth despite brining the tying run to the plate.
The Smokies can clinch a series-win in their fifth game against the Biloxi Shuckers Saturday night at Smokies Stadium. First pitch is set for 7:15 p.m. when the Smokies send RHP Walker Powell (0-2, 3.38) to the mound against RHP Victor Castaneda (1-3, 3.79). Fans can catch the action on 99.1 The Sports Animal or by visiting https://www.milb.com/tennessee/fans/audio-listen-live.
Smokies Stadium will host Grateful Dead Night on Saturday, July 16, featuring a pregame and postgame concert by The Stolen Faces. The Smokies will give away a 3/4 Tee to the first 1,00 fans on Sunday, July 17, in addition to Family Funday. For tickets, call the box office at (865) 286-2300 or visit smokiesbaseball.com.
