Rocket City Trash Pandas News Release
PEARL, Mississippi - The Rocket City Trash Pandas let a victory slip from their grasp on Friday night as a ninth inning lead didn't last in a 6-3 walk-off loss to the Mississippi Braves at Trustmark Park in the fourth game of their six-game series.
Leading 3-2 going to the bottom of the ninth, Rocket City's Jack Dashwood looked to finish the win with his third scoreless inning. After a leadoff walk and a single put runners on first and third, Dashwood was pulled for Luis Ledo. Cody Milligan tied the game for the home team with a sacrifice fly. Two hitters later, Justin-Henry Malloy connected on a three-run walk-off home run, giving the Braves their fourth victory in a row to start the series.
The game started in better fashion than it ended for the visitors. Following a rough start to the series, the Trash Pandas got off to a hot start on Friday night. Livan Soto drew a walk to start the game and Zach Humphreys doubled to put runners on second and third with nobody out. Preston Palmeiro drove in the first run of the night with a single to left and Kevin Maitan followed with a sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead after the first half inning.
In his first inning back with the Trash Pandas since returning from his second Major League stint with the Los Angeles Angels, Chase Silseth worked into early trouble as back-to-back singles put two on with nobody out. But a fly out, a strikeout, and a ground out to short got Silseth through the inning unscathed.
Rocket City added a run in the top of the second when Torii Hunter Jr. singled and stole second for his 12th stolen base of the season. Three hits later, Soto delivered a clutch two-out single to right, plating Hunter Jr. Mississippi got the run right back in the bottom of the frame on Trey Harris' RBI single to left, cutting the lead to 3-1 Rocket City after two.
Silseth rebounded for a one, two, three inning in the third before allowing a run on a sacrifice fly in the fourth to make it a one-run game. In the fifth, the Braves put runners on first and second with nobody out. Silseth got the first out of the inning with a strikeout of Drew Lugbauer, ending his start. Former Mississippi reliever Sean McLaughlin was called on from the bullpen and got the final two outs of the inning to maintain the one-run lead for Rocket City.
Over 4.1 innings, Silseth allowed two runs on seven hits with two walks and seven strikeouts to hold the lead.
McLaughlin returned to the mound in the sixth and worked around a leadoff walk for a scoreless inning to keep the lead at 3-2 after six. Dashwood was next in the seventh and induced a double play to erase a leadoff single for a clean inning of his own. The lefty struck out two in the eighth to complete a pair of scoreless innings.
However in the ninth, the Braves completed the comeback to earn the walk-off win, handing the Trash Pandas their fifth consecutive loss. Dashwood (L, 0-1) took his first loss of the season after allowing two runs over 2.0 innings while Ledo's blown save was his third of the year.
At the plate, Jordyn Adams was the only Rocket City player to record more than one hit in a 2-for-4 performance while Soto went 1-for-2 with three walks from the top of the lineup.
The Trash Pandas (50-35, 9-7 second half) continue their series with the Braves (41-44, 12-4 second half) on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. First pitch is set for 6:05 p.m. Josh Caray will be on the call for 103.9 FM THE UMP and 730 AM SportsRadio.
