Montgomery Biscuits News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Blake Hunt tallied three hits and as many RBIs, and Niko Hulsizer blasted one of the longest home runs of the year as the Biscuits (38-40/10-6) evened the series at two games apiece against the Birmingham Barons (40-45/9-7) with an 8-3 victory on Friday night at Regions Field.
Garrett Davila (4-2) made his sixth start of the season for the Barons, and the lefty served up a single to Brett Wisely on the first pitch of the game. Wisely then stole second and third as Osleivis Basabe walked in the next at-bat. Davila settled down and struck out Kameron Misner and Hulsizer back-to-back, before walking Jordan Qsar to load the bases Hunt then cracked a slow bouncer to third and reached on an infield RBI-single as Barons third baseman D.J. Burt threw it away to bring home the second run and make it 2-0 Biscuits.
Michael Mercado was on the mound for the Biscuits, and the righty worked a one-two-three bottom of the first, striking out Craig Dedelow to end the frame. Davila responded with a one-two-three inning of his own in the top of the second, striking out Garrett Hiott and Tyler Frank to bring the southpaw's total to five.
Mercado retired the first two batters in the bottom of the second, and was one strike away from working another one-two-three inning when he gave up a solo home run to left to Yoelqui Cespedes that got the Barons on the board and made it a 2-1 game. Mercado bounced back and struck out J.J. Muno in the following at-bat.
Davila spun a one-two-three top of the third, and Mercado worked a scoreless bottom of the third, after allowing a lead-off single to Luis Curbelo. The Biscuits loaded the bases again in the top of the fourth, but Davila got Wisely to ground out to the southpaw to quash the rally. Mercado walked Dedelow to begin the bottom of the fourth, but then retired the next three batters to keep it a 2-1 game.
The Biscuits would load the bases against Davila again in the top of the fifth when Hunt ripped a two-run double to left-center to make it 4-1 Montgomery. Evan Edwards then reached on a fielder's choice in the next at-bat, and a throwing error by Barons first baseman Alex Destino made it 5-1 Biscuits and chased Davila from the game.
Andrew Gross relieved Mercado and pitched a clean top of the fifth, striking out Curbelo swinging. Hulsizer destroyed a two-run homer to left in the top of the sixth with an exit velocity of 113 miles per hour and an estimated distance of 458 feet to increase the Biscuits lead to 7-1. Gross allowed a couple runs in the bottom of the sixth on back-to-back RBI-singles by Destino and Cespedes to make it 7-3.
Trey Jeans held the Biscuits scoreless in the top of the seventh, and then Justin Sterner (3-1) pitched a scoreless bottom of the seventh. Edgar Navarro balked home another Biscuit run in the top of eighth to make it 8-3, and then Sterner worked anther scoreless bottom of the eighth, striking out his third batter of the evening.
The Biscuits did not score in the top of the ninth, and Chris Gau came on to slam the door and lock up the win in the bottom of the ninth, despite Montgomery batters striking out a whopping 17 times.
The Biscuits will go for the 3-2 series lead when Mason Montgomery makes his Double-A debut against Sean Burke (1-3) on Saturday night at 6:30 PM CT.
