Shuckers Celebrate America's Birthday with 8-5 Win Over Pensacola
July 4, 2023 - Southern League (SL)
Biloxi Shuckers News Release
BILOXI, MS - On America's birthday, the Biloxi Shuckers (37-39, 3-4) used a five-run third inning to power an 8-5 victory over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (44-31, 3-4) at Blue Wahoos Stadium. The win snapped a four-game losing streak and was Biloxi's eighth Tuesday win, a Southern League best.
The Shuckers' offense started early against Blue Wahoos' starter Evan Fitterer. Despite being retired in order in the first, a walk and a double from Zavier Warren put runners at second and third before Tristen Lutz drove in a run with an RBI fielder's choice. In the third, each of the first eight batters reached, paving the way for a five-run frame. Biloxi extended the lead to 2-0 when Lamar Sparks was brought home on an error. Their second of the inning was scored on an RBI single from Jeferson Quero and another from Wes Clarke, who scored Quero as the next batter. Lutz tallied his second RBI of the day later in the inning, and Sparks drew his second walk of the inning to score Freddy Zamora from third.
With the lead at 6-0, Shuckers' starter James Meeker had more than enough support. Over five innings, he allowed two runners to reach, both on singles from Troy Johnston. Two runners reached second over his five-shutout innings which marked the second straight by a Shuckers starter with at least five scoreless.
In the sixth, the Blue Wahoos struck back with an RBI single from Johnston and another from Griffin Conine. Biloxi, however, answered back with a solo shot from Warren, capping off his three extra-base hit day. In the ninth, Pensacola cut the Shuckers' lead to 8-5 with a three-run home run from Bennett Hostetler. Lefty Luis Amaya, however, closed out the win after entering with one out in the inning.
Meeker (4-3) earned the win while Fitterer (4-3) took the loss for Pensacola. The teams will meet tomorrow at 6:35 p.m. for the second game of the series. Brewers' 10th-ranked prospect Carlos Rodriguez is expected to start for Biloxi.
Tomorrow's game can be heard on Cruisin' WGCM 1240 AM, 100.9 FM with coverage beginning at 6:20 p.m. with the Biloxi Shuckers Pregame Show. The game can also be seen live on MiLB.tv
