Shrimp Sneak by Generals on Late Runs

June 16, 2018 - Southern League (SL1)
Jackson Generals News Release

JACKSONVILLE, FLA. - It won't be a 40-win First Half for the Jackson Generals, as the visiting side fell 7-6 on Saturday evening in Jacksonville. The host Jacksonville Jumbo Shirmp (28-39) pushed past West Tennessee's finest with three runs spread across the sixth and seventh innings, undoing any plans for the Generals (38-30) to potentially match the 40-win Biloxi Shuckers from the South Division for most wins in the league before the All-Star Break.

After only getting an inning of unofficial work in Tuesday's rained-out double-header finale at Mobile, Bo Takahashi got the Saturday start for Jackson, dealing five innings while allowing four runs. The 21-year-old right-hander walked three and struck out five, leaving while his side still held a 6-4 lead. Bud Jeter allowed an earned run for only the second time this season in the sixth, but Mason McCullough (0-1, 6.35 ERA) had trouble with command, throwing only seven of his 22 pitches for strikes and recording one out while surrendering the lead. Jacksonville's speed took its toll, as the Jumbo Shrimp swiped three bases against McCullough in the seventh en route to five stolen bases on the night, a season high for a Jackson opponent. Yuhei Nakaushiro took the wheel and steered through the next 1.2 innings without allowing more damage.

The Generals' offense rode on pumped-up tires to begin the game, but it sputtered toward the end of the race. Jackson got on the board in the first with four singles to take a 2-0 lead, but the Shrimp fought back for three runs of their own in the bottom half. In the fourth, the Generals got even as Josh Prince homered for the second time this season, claiming his first of two extra-base hits on the evening. The fifth inning was just as fortunate, with Prince plating Jamie Westbrook and Rudy Flores with a triple deep to center field at The Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville, and an errant throw from Jacksonville second baseman Isan Diaz allowed Prince to cross home safely for a 6-3 Generals advantage. That would be the last time the visiting side would score, as Jacksonville's bullpen limited the potent Generals offense to a mere three hits over the final four innings. Prince finished with seven total bases, a season high, but the Generals found themselves on the short end of the stick despite five different players recording multiple hits.
