Mobile BayBears News Release
PENSACOLA, Fla. - Right-handed pitcher Jake Jewell, a former member of the Mobile BayBears, pitched a scoreless eighth inning for the Los Angeles Angels in his Major League debut Saturday afternoon at the Oakland Coliseum.
Jewell, 25, pitched in 31 games and made 23 starts with the BayBears over the past two seasons. In seven relief appearances in April, Jewell went 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA (three runs allowed in 13 innings) and was 2-for-2 in save situations. He only walked two batters and recorded 11 strikeouts.
Jewell continued to have success with Triple-A Salt Lake, going 1-4 with a 3.97 ERA in 17 relief appearances with the Bees. He was recalled by the Angels Friday and made his debut Saturday in relief against Oakland. Jewell worked around a two-out hit-by-pitch to retire the side, with a strikeout of Athletics No. 3 prospect Franklin Barreto to end the inning.
Last year with Mobile, Jewell went 7-8 with a 4.84 ERA in 24 games, 23 starts, after beginning the season with Class A Advanced Inland Empire. He logged a career-high 140 2/3 innings combined between the two levels. Jewell was added to the Angels 40-man roster during the offseason.
The Norman, Okla., native was selected by the Angels in the fifth round of the 2014 MLB Draft out of Northeastern Oklahoma A&M. Jewell is currently the No. 27 prospect in the organization, according to MLB Pipeline.
Jewell is the eighth player from the 2017 BayBears and the second member of the 2018 Mobile squad to appear with the Angels this season. Infielder David Fletcher, outfielder Michael Hermosillo, catcher Jose Briceno, and right-handed pitchers Parker Bridwell, Eduardo Paredes, Jaime Barria, and Justin Anderson (2017-18) have all spent time with the Angels in 2018.
The BayBears wrap up a five-game road series against the Pensacola Blue Wahoos Sunday at 1:05 p.m. CDT. Live coverage can be seen on MiLB.tv (Pensacola feed, subscription required, promo code: BAYBEARS) and heard on the BayBears Broadcast Network, the TuneIn Radio App, and the MiLB First Pitch App, with the Countdown to First Pitch starting at 12:45 p.m.
