MOBILE, Ala. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (39-50, 10-9) fell to the Mobile BayBears (35-51, 8-10) by a 7-2 score in the fifth game of the six-game series at Hank Aaron Stadium on Monday night.
Mobile right-handed starting pitcher Jeremy Beasley (5-5) earned the victory, pitching five scoreless innings where he allowed five hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Jacksonville left-handed starting pitcher Daniel Castano (1-1) took the loss, allowing five runs (all earned) on 11 hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Mobile right-handed relief pitcher Adam Hofacket earned his fifth save of the season by pitching the final three innings and maintaining Mobile's lead.
The first inning was scoreless before the BayBears took the game's first lead in the bottom of the second inning on an Erick Salcedo RBI single to build a 1-0 lead. An inning later in the bottom of the third Julian Leon delivered a two-out RBI double to make it 2-0 BayBears. The BayBears made it a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Jhoan Urena.
Jacksonville plated its first run in the top of the sixth against Mobile right-handed relief pitcher Luis Pena, as his wild pitch scored Billy Fleming from third to make it a 3-1 game. In the bottom of the sixth the BayBears struck for four runs. Jahmai Jones started the rally with a two-RBI single, combined with a throwing error by center fielder Corey Bird it emptied the bases and pushed the BayBears advantage to 6-1. Urena capped the rally with an RBI single to give Mobile a 7-1 lead.
With two outs in the top of the ninth inning, Joe Dunand collected an RBI single for the Jumbo Shrimp to make it a 7-2 game, which would be the final.
Riley Mahan and J.C. Millan collected multi-hit games for Jacksonville, with Mahan going 2-for-5 and Millan 2-for-4 after both posted career-highs of four hits yesterday. Jacksonville left 11 men on base in the game, and the Shrimp hit 1-for-11 as a team with runners in scoring position.
The start of the game was delayed by 40 minutes due to the threat of rain and a light rain shower at Hank Aaron Stadium.
The Jumbo Shrimp and BayBears will finish their series with the sixth game of the six-game set at Hank Aaron Stadium on Tuesday night at 7:35 p.m. eastern. Right-handed pitcher Edward Cabrera (2-0, 2.25 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Mobile right-handed pitcher Zack Kelly (1-4, 4.04 ERA).
