PEARL, Miss. - The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (16-30) fell to the Mississippi Braves (21-23) by a 7-0 score in the first game of the five-game series at Trustmark Park on Wednesday night.

Mississippi left-handed starting pitcher Joey Wentz (2-3) earned the victory with seven scoreless innings where he allowed three hits and struck out five batters while issuing no walks. Jacksonville right-handed starting pitcher Jorge Guzman (1-5) took the loss, working five innings where he allowed five runs (all earned) on six hits with four walks and three strikeouts.

Mississippi got on the board first in the bottom of the third, as Riley Unroe delivered a two-run single with two outs to give the Braves a 2-0 lead. Mississippi's Luis Valenzuela started the bottom of the fourth with a triple, and two batters later Daniel Lockhart brought him home with an RBI single to grow the lead to 3-0. In the bottom of the fifth, Valenzuela gave the Braves a 5-0 lead with his two-run double.

Against Jumbo Shrimp left-handed relief pitcher McKenzie Mills, the Braves added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. Carlos Martinez added an RBI single before a Drew Waters sacrifice fly grew the lead to 7-0, which would be the final.

The Jumbo Shrimp and Braves will continue their series with the second game of the five-game set on Thursday night at 7:35 p.m. eastern. Right-handed pitcher Cody Poteet (2-3, 2.93 ERA) will start for Jacksonville against Mississippi left-handed pitcher Tucker Davidson (1-2, 1.65 ERA).
