Montgomery Biscuits News Release
MONTGOMERY, Ala.. - Brendan McKay (3-0) threw six scoreless innings and the Biscuits (29-16) shut out the Jackson Generals (24-20), 3-0, in Wednesday night's series opener at Riverwalk Stadium.
Biscuits closer Curtis Taylor, who is a perfect seven-for-seven in save situations this season, opened for the first time in 2019, and tossed two scoreless frames before handing things over to McKay. The relief appearance was McKay's first since last season with A+ Charlotte.
Jackson starter Kevin McCanna (2-1) held his own against the Biscuits through the first four innings, allowing only a Josh Lowe single and two walks. In the fifth, David Rodriguez singled, and after McCanna retired the next two batters, Miles Mastrobuoni smashed an RBI-triple into the right-center field gap, just past a diving Pavin Smith to make it 1-0 Biscuits. Josh Lowe then ripped McCanna's next pitch down the right field line for an RBI-double and made it a 2-0 game.
That was all McKay needed, as the Rays number three prospect tossed 4.2 perfect innings before Andy Young became the Generals first baserunner against the southpaw with a two-out single in the seventh. McKay would surrender just two hits and one walk over the six scoreless frames, striking out nine. McKay has now gone a team-high 20.1 consecutive-scoreless innings and has allowed just one earned run over his last 28 innings on the mound.
Rene Pinto would add a bloop RBI-single to right off Cameron Gann in the eighth, before Phoenix Sanders closed things out with a 1-2-3 ninth for the righty's fourth save.
The Biscuits will try to make it back-to-back wins against the Generals on Thursday night when Riley O'Brien (1-2) takes on Bryan Valdez (0-1) at 6:35 PM CT on Southern Rock Night featuring a T-Shirt Giveaway presented by Alfa Insurance.
The series will also feature Ladies Night presented by At Home and MAX Fireworks on Friday, May 24; Greenbow Night featuring a Bobblehead Giveaway presented by Capital Trailways and MAX Fireworks on Saturday, May 25; and Lil' Crumbs Dress Like a Player Snellzilla Pillow Giveaway on Sunday, May 26.
