January 20, 2014 - Central Hockey League (CHL) News Release
Three Things You Need to Know
1.) MLK Day in the CHL- There are three games on the schedule for Martin Luther King Day, all are the third straight game played between the opponents. In Allen, the Americans (22-10-4) will face the Arizona Sundogs (15-18-2) in an early start time after the two teams split shootout wins in Arizona over the weekend. Allen is 8-0-2 in their last 10 games and the Sundogs are 5-0-1 in their last six. The Brampton Beast (19-16-3) and St. Charles Chill (9-24-5) will play the rubber match in their three game series and the Rapid City Rush (25-9-0) and Denver Cutthroats (18-11-7) will battle for the third time in four days.
2.) Colorado Tour Continues- The Denver Cutthroats (18-11-7) will continue their "ÃËColorado Tour' this weekend when they host the Arizona Sundogs (15-18-2) in Vail, Colorado at the Dobson Arena. The Cutthroats won a pair of games over the Tulsa Oilers (19-19-2) earlier in January in Aspen as the opening two games of the tour. The Fish are displaced from the Denver Coliseum until early February due to the annual National Western Stock Show. The Sundogs and the Cutthroats have played six games this season with each team winning three times. Denver has the fewest regulation home losses in the league with just four sitting at 11-4-3 on the season on home ice.
3.) Thunder Rolling- The Wichita Thunder (15-17-4) are coming off a perfect three win weekend that saw them dominate a shorthanded Quad City team by a 7-1 score on Friday and then win back-to-back games over Missouri (Saturday in overtime and Sunday by one goal in regulation). The Thunder have won four straight games overall and are continuing to be a strong road team with a 9-6-2 mark away from home (have won four of their last five road contests). Veterans Matt Summers and RG Flath were slowed at the start of the season but both have been coming on strong as of late with Summers recording three goals and three assists over his last five games and Flath scoring three times with two assists in his last five. Wichita is in Tulsa facing the Oilers on Tuesday night.
By the Numbers
319: The number of wins that Wichita Head Coach Kevin McClelland has in his CHL career tying him with Bill McDonald for sixth on the all-time wins list. The two-time CHL Coach of the Year has won 132 games with Wichita, won 100 games with Mississippi and 87 games with Colorado. McClelland will look to pass McDonald on Tuesday night when the Thunder play in Tulsa.
One-Timers
-Missouri forward Sebastien Thinel ended a seven-game goal scoring drought on Saturday versus Wichita giving him 11 goals on the season and 298 in his CHL career. Thinel is on the verge of becoming just the sixth player to score 300 CHL goals.
-Rapid City forward Konrad Reeder has three goals and two assists over his past four games and is a +6 over that stretch. Reeder leads all players with a +32 on the season. The veteran has been a minus in just four games this season.
-Denver forward A.J. Gale continues to impress in Manchester in the AHL sitting with six goals and three assists, along with a +4 plus/minus rating, in 21 games played. Gale has five goals and 12 assists in 13 games with the Fish when he was called up to the Monarchs
-David Rutherford and Brandon Coccimiglio have been great pick-ups for the Arizona Sundogs who are 5-0-1 in their last six games. Rutherford has five goals and six assists in seven games with the Sundogs (5-1-1 in those games) and Coccimiglio has 10 goal and nine assists in 10 games with Arizona.
-Brampton's Jason Pitton has been on a tear lately with seven goals in his last six games and he currently has a team-leading 18 goals on the season.
-After going 7 for 11 on the power play in their previous three games, the Missouri Mavericks were held without a PP goal on Sunday going 0 for 5. They still lead the league with a 22.1% success rate. Missouri's PK is also one of the best in the league sitting second with an 86% kill rate (stopped all nine of Wichita's PP chances on Sunday).
-Wichita's defensive duo of Jesse Dudas (10-20=30) and Andrew Martens (5-25=30) are the top two scoring blue liners in the CHL. Dudas is tied for the lead among defensemen with 10 goals (Allen's Tyler Ludwig) and Martens leads all d-men with 25 helpers.
