Youngstown, OH - The Youngstown Phantoms (26-15-4-3, 59pts) fell 3-0 to the Dubuque Fighting Saints Saturday Night at The Covelli Centre. The 3-0 defeat is the first shutout loss since March 25th, 2022. The home team was shorthanded on the night as they were down two key pieces from Friday night's game. Going 0-for-7 on the power play on the night led to a less than desired outcome, however, Phantoms Head Coach Ryan Ward knows his team is hitting its stride.
"Our guys played hard," Ward said. "On the back end of a three in three, I am proud of my guys, they're working. The only thing that matters is shaking hands in May, and we're pretty good at that."
Beckett Hendrickson got the Fighting Saints on the board early. Hendrickson located a rebound off Phantoms goalie Aiden Wright and fired it home to take the lead only 34 seconds into the contest. The rest of the first period was filled with defensive minded hockey. The Phantoms managed seven shots to the Fighting Saints nine as the Fighting Saints headed into the intermission with a 1-0 lead.
The second period was littered with good defense and penalties, leading to not a lot of offense. The Phantoms racked up nine shots in the period, while Dubuque got seven of their own. The Phantoms started the period on the power play, but ultimately came out unsuccessful. Dubuque's 1-0 lead held going into the final frame. It was much of the same throughout the third period until Wright was pulled at 18:02. Hendrickson picked up his second goal of the night at 18:22 on the Phantoms empty net. Holding a 2-0 lead with 1:38 left, Michael Barron put the game to rest when he sent a shot past Wright giving the visitors a 3-0 victory.
Despite the loss, Wright was stellar on the night for the Phantoms, stopping 24 of 26 shots. Kevin Reidler posted the shutout, his second of the season, stopping all 25 shots sent his way.
The Phantoms are back in action next Friday as they begin a three-in-three set against the Muskegon Lumberjacks at the Covelli Centre. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 and Friday and Saturday, with the Sunday matinee starting at 4:05.
