San Jose Earthquakes News Release
PORTLAND, Ore.. - The San Jose Earthquakes fell 3-0 on the road against the Portland Timbers at Providence Park on Wednesday.
San Jose dressed just 16 players for the match due to injuries, international call-ups and suspension. The starting lineup included a pair of rookies as well as second-year striker Adam Jahn, who made his first start of the season after returning from his loan stint with USL PRO champions Sacramento Republic FC.
Rodney Wallace opened the scoring for Portland in the 41st minute. The Costa Rican international finished from a tight angle in the box after Darlington Nagbe sprung him with pass from the top of the area.
Diego Valeri tacked on two goals in the second half to account for the final score, starting with a penalty in the 51st minute. Jason Hernandez was whistled for a foul inside the box on a Timbers free kick, setting up Valeri's spot kick. The Argentinean playmaker connected his brace a little over 20 minutes later, tapping his shot into an open net after Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch saved a blast from Wallace at the near post.
San Jose nearly pulled one back late in the match. Jahn struck a deflected Sam Cronin pass hard and high, but it slammed into the crossbar and bounced away.
Busch ended the night with seven saves, bringing his season haul up to 127 - 10 shy of Joe Cannon's club record (137) set in 2000.
The Earthquakes complete their two-game road trip against Real Salt Lake at Rio Tinto Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 11. Kickoff is 6:30 p.m. PT on Comcast SportsNet California, 1590 KLIV and 1370 KZSF.
