
Shorebirds Win Thriller over RiverDogs, 8-7

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds scored a run in the tenth inning to defeat the Charleston RiverDogs, 8-7, at Joseph P. Riley, Jr. Park on Tuesday night. All eight runs were produced with two outs on the board.
The Shorebirds had not scored in the first inning in eleven consecutive games. In the first, Tommy Winegardner reached on a fielder's choice. After a single by Nicky Delmonico to center field, Jason Esposito hit a two out single into right field to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead.
The RiverDogs knotted the game in the second. Tyler Austin led off with a double to dead center. Dante Bichette, Jr. followed with a double to advance Austin to third. Then, Ben Gamel hit a sacrifice fly to right field.
Charleston took their first lead of the game in the fourth. Gary Sanchez hit a home run to dead center field, his first of the season. Later in the inning, Angelo Gumbs singled home Gamel.
The Shorebirds evened the score at three in the fifth. With two outs, Nicky Delmonico pulled a double down the right field line. Justin Dalles then doubled into right-center field to cut the deficit to 3-2. After Esposito kept the inning alive with a single, Webb tied the game with a sharp single off the side slope of the mound and into center field.
In the ninth inning, the Shorebirds exploded for four runs. With the bases loaded and two outs, Wynston Sawyer hit a two strike pitch through the right side of the infield to give the Shorebirds a 5-3 lead. Then, Connor Narron doubled through the alley in right-center field to build the lead to 7-3.
The RiverDogs stormed from behind to tie the game in the bottom of the ninth inning. Bichette, Jr. capped a four-run inning with a two-run single back up the middle.
In the tenth inning, Dalles hit a two out double to the right field wall to score Davis, who led off with a hard line drive into center field.
David Baker, who got the final out of the ninth inning, retired the RiverDogs in order in the tenth to end the game.
The Shorebirds return to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium on Thursday, May 10 for game one against the Kannapolis Intimidators.
