Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
MYRTLE BEACH, SC. -- After inclement weather postponed the June 3 suspended game scheduled to resume today to June 5, the Shorebirds would come out victorious over the Myrtle Beach Pelicans 2-1 on Saturday night in the originally scheduled nine-inning affair.
The Shorebirds struck first in the top half of the first inning scoring one run to get the offense started from Myrtle Beach. After a leadoff single from Luis Valdez, Valdez would end up stealing second base and ultimately scoring on a fielder's choice from Noelberth Romero giving the 'Birds the early 1-0 advantage.
After the Pelicans tied things up at 1 apiece in the bottom of fifth, the Shorebirds got two two-out doubles to break the tie in the eighth. With two outs, Moises Ramirez doubled to straight away centerfield before trading places with Luis Valdez reclaiming the lead.
Two runs would be all the Shorebirds would need this evening as the pitching tandem of Dan Hammer, Moises Chace, and Hugo Beltran stifled Pelicans hitters all night.
Hammer received the ball to start throwing five innings, surrendering just 1 run, 4 hits, and punching out 5 before giving way to the bullpen. From there Chace and Beltran would slam the door shut, allowing only 2 hits over the last four innings of play securing the Shorebirds victory.
The Shorebirds will be back in action tomorrow, June 5, when they take on the Myrtle Beach Pelicans in the last two games of the series before they return home to Perdue Stadium June 7 - 12. The Shorebirds and Pelicans will play a partial doubleheader with the first game being a continuation of the suspended game from June 3 with a 7-inning game to follow.
