Delmarva Shorebirds News Release

After losing two in a row, the Shorebirds were counting on their ace to put an end to the losing streak. Very quickly, it became clear that John Mariotti was up to the task.

The Toronto-native dominated the BlueClaws lineup for seven shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out seven to pick up his second win of the season, a 7-2 triumph for Delmarva. In addition, Lakewood never hit the ball out of the infield in Mariotti's seven innings of work!

In support of Mariotti, the 'Birds' offense got on track early, as third basemen Tyler Henson drove the first pitch he saw with two outs in the first inning over the left field wall. Henson's second bomb of the series (and the season) lifted Delmarva to a 1-0 lead.

It remained a one run ballgame into the sixth, when the Shorebirds batted around, scoring five runs on four singles and Henson's two-run double. After breaking it open in the sixth, the Shorebirds would tack on another in the ninth on Matt Tucker's RBI double.

The BlueClaws were able to spoil the shutout bid, scoring two off reliever Sean Gleason in the ninth, but the Shorebirds were able to hang on for the 7-2 victory.
