GreenJackets Suffer Worst Loss of the Season

Augusta, GA - The GreenJackets (9-9) lost a lopsided game to the Greenville Drive (10-8) on Sunday afternoon with a 19-7 loss, the GreenJackets worst loss of the season. Greenville scored 13 runs in the seventh inning to break a 5-5 tie and Augusta used four different pitchers in the half inning.

Dan Turpen (1-1) started the inning and suffered the loss allowing three runs on three hits in two innings of work. Turpen entered the game in the fifth inning and pitched two scoreless innings but could not record an out in the seventh when he hit a batter and allowed back-to-back base hits as Greenville broke a 5-5 tie on Mike Jones RBI single off Turpen.

The Drive sent 19 batters to plate, had 10 hits and were helped out by five walks with four coming with the bases loaded. Dan Runzler allowed four runs on two hits, two walks and did not record an out. Andrew De La Garza recorded the first out with a strikeout but allowed five runs on four hits while walking one.

Joe Paterson recorded the final two outs and worked the final 2.2 innings allowing two runs, both unearned, on three hits. The lefty also walked two and struck out three.

Augusta trailed 5-0 early when Greenville scored in the first inning on an RBI single from Anthony Rizzo for a 1-0 lead then added four more in the second inning. Aaron Reza had a three-run double and Yamaico Navarro followed an RBI single in the second inning.

Starter Craig Clark worked four innings and allowed five runs on six hits while walking two and striking out two.

The GreenJackets rallied back to tie it at 5-5 beginning in the bottom of the second when Charlie Culberson connected for a two-run homer, his first of the season, to make it 5-2, Greenville.

Augusta then got a single run in the fifth inning on an RBI double from Francisco Peguero and two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-run single from James Simmons to pull even at 5-5.

The GreenJackets got two more runs in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs when Nick Noonan connected for his first home run of the season and Brock Bond had an RBI single after Thomas Neal tripled.

The rubber game of the three game series is Monday night with Augusta sending right-hander Orlando Yntema (0-1, 5.00) to the hill. The Drive counters with right-hander Eammon Portice (1-2, 3.77). First pitch is at 7:05 p.m.

Game Notes:

Augusta pitching allowed season highs in walks (8), hits (18) and runs (19) in the loss

Thomas Neal extended his hit streak to 10 games while Brock Bond pushed his to eight

Bryce Cox (1-0) recorded the win in relief for Greenville allowing two runs on two hits in 1.2 innings worked. Cox also walked one and struck out three.
