Hagerstown Suns News Release

EASTLAKE, OH - The Hagerstown Suns (7-10) broke a four-game slide with a 3-2 victory over the first-place Lake County Captains (11-6) at Classic Park in Eastlake, OH on Sunday.

Good pitching and timely hitting helped the Suns top the Captains after dropping the first two games of the three-game series. Hagerstown starter Jeff Mandel was solid, pitching four and two thirds innings, allowing just two runs and striking out three batters. Mandel was followed by Clint Everts who did not allow a run in his two and one third innings of hitless relief.

Edulin Abreu (1-0) earned the win for Hagerstown, as he allowed just two hits and two walks after coming in for Everts to start the eighth inning, while Atahualpa Severino got his first save of the season, retiring one Lake County hitter to close out the game in the ninth inning.

The scoring started for Hagerstown in the top of the fourth inning, as left fielder Aaron Seuss reached with his second hit of the game, and DH Tim Pahuta followed with a ground ball to second baseman Karexon Sanchez that was mishandled. Both Pahuta and Seuss were safe, and Suns' third baseman Steven Souza singled to drive home Seuss. Pahuta later scored on a wild pitch by Lake County starting pitcher Kelvin De La Cruz.

The Captains responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning against Mandel, but Everts retired left fielder Roman Pena with two runners on to keep the game tied.

Neither team scored again until the top of the ninth inning, as Steven Souza legged out a double to left field off reliever Dallas Cawiezell (1-1), and second baseman Trevor Lawhorn singled to center field, driving in Souza.

Cawiezell took the loss for the Captains.

The Suns return to Municipal Stadium in Hagerstown, MD to take on the Lakewood BlueClaws in the first game of a three game series on Monday, April 21st. Gates will open at 5:35 P.M. and first pitch is scheduled for 6:35.
