Delmarva Shorebirds News Release
SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The Delmarva Shorebirds romped the Savannah Sand Gnats on a rain-soaked Tuesday evening at Grayson Stadium. Delmarva blitzed the Gnats in a seven-run second inning, building a 12-0 lead before the game was called due to rain after five innings.
The Shorebirds capitalized on a few crucial errors committed by the Savannah defense. In the second, the scoring started with a sacrifice fly by Jonah Heim. The lead would have been just 1-0, but a throwing error by Pedro Perez with two outs kept the rally alive. Alex Murphy drew a bases loaded walk for his 20th RBI of the season, most in the South Atlantic League.
Conor Bierfeldt kept the inning going with a flare single to right field, clearing the bases. Jomar Reyes lifted a deep fly ball to right-center that fell out of the glove of Wuilmer Becerra for another unearned run. Of the seven runs scored in the second, only one was earned to starter Scarlyn Reyes.
The onslaught continued in the third and fourth innings. Heim ripped an RBI single to center to score Jared Breen in the third. Four doubles in the fourth created four more runs with the help of another dropped fly ball in right field.
Matthew Grimes tossed a gem in the rain-shortened contest, pitching five shutout innings. The tall right-hander allowed just one hit and one walk, and he set a new career-high with 11 strikeouts. The 11 Ks are the most by a Shorebirds' pitcher since Parker Bridwell struck out 14 batters back on August 16, 2013 vs. Lakewood.
Heim went 2-for-2 with a run scored and three RBIs to lead Delmarva offensively. Delmarva as a team collected five doubles, their most in a single game this year. Grimes earned his first win as a Shorebird, while Reyes fell to 0-3 in three starts for Savannah.
Delmarva will go for a series win in game two on Wednesday evening. Sebastian Vader (1-0, 0.69) will start for the Shorebirds against fellow right-hander Corey Oswalt (2-0, 5.51) for Savannah. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm at Historic Grayson Stadium.
