Asheville Tourists News Release

ASHEVILLE, NC-- A day off from the action can have all kinds of effects on a team. Yesterday's off day was exactly what the Asheville Tourists needed. They opened up a seven-game homestand Tuesday night rested and ready. In a complete team effort, Asheville defeated the Charleston RiverDogs 5-1.

It all started in the bottom of the first inning. Wes Rogers led off the frame with a double and scored two batters later on a single from Drew Weeks. Sean Dwyer promptly plated Weeks with a double off the centerfield wall. Later in the inning, Dom Nunez laced a single into right-center scoring Dwyer. The Tourists held a 3-0 advantage after one.

Both teams struggled to score during the middle innings. Charleston had a number of opportunities but never could crack the Tourists starter Zach Jemiola. Their best chance came in the top of the fifth. The RiverDogs put runners at second and third with no outs and the top of the order set to come to the plate. Jemiola responded with three consecutive strikeouts to end the threat.

Jerry Vasto entered the game for Asheville in the sixth and worked out of a runners-at-first-and-third jam unscathed. The RiverDogs did manage to plate one in the seventh, but Asheville answered with two in the eighth. Emerson Jimenez doubled home Yonathan Daza with two outs. Jimenez then stole third and scored on a passed ball.

Charleston loaded the bases in the top of the ninth, but Yoely Bello recorded a strikeout and a groundout to end the game. The RiverDogs left a total of 12 men on base and struck out 14 times in the game. Zach Jemiola earned his third win of the season by tossing five-plus scoreless frames and striking out seven.

Game two of the scheduled three-game set between Asheville and Charleston is set for Wednesday evening with the first pitch slated for 7:05pm.
