Shorebirds Split Doubleheader with Suns on Sunday

Hagerstown, MD - The Delmarva Shorebirds (16-18) scored a season high 12 runs to win game one over the Hagerstown Suns (20-13) 12-7, but lost game two 4-3 in nine innings at Municipal Stadium on Sunday night.

The Suns used a Wander Ramos two-run home run in the first inning to build a 2-0 lead.

The Shorebirds countered in the second. Nik Balog opened the inning with a single to left. Then, Wynston Sawyer doubled off the base of the right field wall. Torsten Boss followed with a towering home run to right field to put the Shorebirds in the lead 3-2. Two batters later, Adrian Marin singled to right field. Then, Anthony Vega reached on an error by second baseman Tony Renda. After a fielder's choice by Gregory Lorenzo, Tucker Nathans ripped a three-run homer to right field to increase the lead to 6-2.

The Shorebirds continued to produce against Suns starter Kylin Turnbull in the third. Balog and Sawyer hit back-to-back singles. With one out, Lucas Herbst grounded to second to score Balog. After a walk to Marin, Vega singled to center to stretch the lead to 8-2. Then, Lorenzo hit a line drive to center field to plate Marin.

The Suns plated a run in the fourth. Brandon Miller doubled to open the inning. With one out, he tagged up to third on a fly ball to right and scored as Boss mishandled the throw back to the infield by Herbst.

Hagerstown bridged the deficit to 9-6 with three runs in the fifth inning. Stephen Perez hit a lead off single. Tony Renda followed with his first career home run to cut the deficit to 9-5. Two batters later, Wander Ramos walked. After a hit by Shawn Pleffner, Brandon Miller singled home Ramos. Matt Hobgood replaced Kline and induced a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

The Suns tacked on a run in the sixth inning. Norfolk singled to open the inning. He advanced to second on a single by Pedro Severino and scored on a throwing error by Boss.

The Shorebirds put the game away in the seventh inning. Balog and Sawyer reached against reliever Brian Rauh. Then, Torsten Boss blasted his second three-run homer of the game to right field to put the Shorebirds in front 12-7.

Hobgood retired the Suns in order in the seventh to earn his fourth win of the season.

Balog went 4-for-4 in game one.

In game two, the Shorebirds got on the scoreboard first in the third. Connor Narron drew a lead off walk. Then, Marin hit a double to deep left field to give the Shorebirds a 1-0 lead. Two batters later, Lorenzo singled to score Marin. Later in the inning, Joel Hutter hit a sacrifice fly to right field to stretch the lead to 3-0.

Shorebirds starter Josh Hader retired the first nine batters he faced including six in a row between the second and third innings.

In the fourth, the Suns used a two out rally to tie the game. Tony Renda led off with a single. He advanced to third on a two-base throwing error by Gregory Lorenzo. With two outs, Shawn Pleffner singled to trim the deficit to 3-1. Then, Brandon Miller hit a two run homer to right-center field.

Hader went five innings and allowed three hits and two earned runs. He struck out a season high nine batters and did not issue a walk.

Dennis Torres tossed two scoreless innings in his debut.

The Shorebirds and Suns remained tied at 3-3 until the ninth inning. Brandon Miller drew a lead off walk from reliever Lex Rutledge. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Wes Schill. After a wild pitch moved him to third, Erick Fernandez hit a soft flare to right field to plate the winning run.

The Shorebirds travel to Lakewood, New Jersey for game one against the BlueClaws on Monday, May 13 at 6:35pm.
