
Shorebirds hang on for win in Game 2

Salisbury, Md. - The Delmarva Shorebirds built an early lead and hung on late to defeat the Greensboro Grasshoppers 6-5 at NewBridge Bank Park on Saturday night. The Shorebirds have secured at least a series split by winning the first two games.
The Shorebirds grabbed an early lead in the first inning. With one out, Jonathan Schoop walked and Manny Machado followed with a bloop single to right-center field. Then, Kieron Pope blasted a three-run homer over the left field wall to give the âBirds a 3-0 edge.
The Grasshoppers responded in the first inning with a run. Dan Black started the frame with a double towards the left-center field gap. He advanced to third on a deep fly ball to right field. Black came into score on a ground out to second by Christian Yelich.
The Shorebirds tacked on another run in the fourth inning. Trent Mummey got aboard with a one out single. He stole second base and advanced to third on a ground out by Jonathan Schoop. Then, Manny Machado lined a single up the middle to give the Shorebirds a 4-1 edge.
The Grasshoppers tacked on runs in the fourth and fifth innings. With two outs in the fourth, Marcell Ozuna hit a solo homer over the center field wall. In the fifth inning, Dan Black singled home Brent Keys, who was issued a one out walk.
In the seventh inning, the Shorebirds tacked on a run to build a 5-3 edge. Kipp Schutz drew a one out walk. He then stole second base. Schutz then stole third and scored on the same play as the throw from the catcher Jacob Realmuto got away from the third baseman.
Trent Mummey hit a towering home run in the eighth inning to give the Shorebirds a 6-3 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth inning, Ozuna hit a two-run homer off relief pitcher Jarret Martin to pull the Grasshoppers within one at 6-5.
David Walters entered in the ninth inning and picked up his fourth save of the season. He struck out two batters.
Shorebirds starter Scott Copeland earned his first win of the season in seven strong innings. He allowed just five hits and three runs. Copeland retired 11 consecutive batters between the first and fourth innings.
The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers play game three of the series on Sunday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. LHP Tim Berry is the scheduled starter for Delmarva.
