Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA - The Augusta GreenJackets bullpen stepped up to stem the bleeding from an early West Virginia Power scoring barrage, but the bats failed to hold up their end of the bargain in an 8-5 GreenJackets loss on Saturday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium.
The Power scored in all of the first four innings, with multiple runs in each of the first three. GreenJackets starter Edwin Escobar surrendered two first inning runs on a groundout and a run-scoring single, he allowed two more in the second on a pair of fielder's choice plays and he allowed three more in the third on three RBI singles. After three innings, West Virginia opened a commanding 7-2 lead they wouldn't lose. Escobar (0-2) takes the loss after allowing seven earned runs on nine hits and two walks, striking out three.
After getting a run in the first on a groundout, Augusta was poised to get within striking distance in the second. Two singles and a walk loaded the bases for Rafael Rodriguez, who grounded out to bring in Augusta's second run. Chris Lofton hit a fly ball to right-center and it appeared that Devin Harris had scored on a sacrifice fly to cut the Power lead to one. However, West Virginia won an appeal at third base saying Harris had left third early and with Harris out, the inning was over. Augusta didn't get any closer until the ninth.
West Virginia managed just an unearned fourth inning run off the GreenJackets bullpen. Matt Graham threw four innings while Gaspar Santiago fired one apiece and together the three of them combined to hold the Power to that unearned run on two hits and no walks while striking out four.
Power starter Tyler Waldron was hit around early, but survived for his second win in large part due to the fact that the GreenJackets were just 2-12 at the plate with men in scoring position. Waldron (2-0) allowed four runs on eight hits and a walk in his five innings, striking out four.
The GreenJackets didn't get a hit off the Power bullpen until the ninth inning, when back-to-back singles put two men on with one out and Chris Lofton at the plate. Lofton grounded out to bring one home but Carlos Willoughby struck out swinging to end the game.
The third game of the series will feature Augusta's Taylor Rogers (0-1) taking the mound to face West Virginia's Colton Cain (0-0). First pitch will come at 2:05 with the pregame action beginning at 1:50, airing online at www.greenjacketsbaseball.com.
