Tonight's Game...
The Kannapolis Intimidators send Matt Heidenreich to the mound against the Hickory Crawdads in the second game of a four-game series. **The game is scheduled to start on time at 7:05 p.m. despite rain storms earlier in the day.** Heidenreich, a fourth round pick by the White Sox in 2009, tossed 5 and 1/3 innings against Delmarva on April 11, allowing three runs on eight hits with four strike outs. He went a combined 6-2 with a 2.69 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 14 games (11 starts) with Bristol and Kannapolis in 2010. Heidenreich will duel Hickory's Justin Grimm, who did not earn a decision in his first start, tossing 5 and 1/3 inning and allowing two runs (one earned) and striking out eight batters against Asheville on April 10.
Doing It For Dale...
The Intimidators will debut their new alternate logo at tonight's game. The logo features a red scripted letter "I" with the silhouette of former team owner and NASCAR legend Dale Earnhardt. The Intimidators will wear the alternate logos seven times during the 2011 season, once for each Winston Cup Championship won by the Hall of Famer.
Baby, You're A Firework...
Tonight's game will feature a post-game fireworks show, presented by CMC-NorthEast.
Seven Straight...
After dropping the season opener in Lakewood on April 7, Kannapolis has won its last seven games. This is the team's longest winning streak since taking 12 in a row during the 2009 season (August 15-27).
Lineup Shuffle...
Shortstop Kyle Eveland left Friday's game after being hit in the head by a pitch. Jake Oester entered the game for Eveland, playing third base while third baseman Juan Silverio moved to shortstop. Silverio is expected to play shortstop until Eveland returns to the lineup.
Hitting the Blanke Out Of The Ball...
Intimidators catcher Mike Blanke smacked two doubles and a triple in Friday night's game against Hickory. Blanke is now tied for second in the SAL with six extra-base hits.
About Last Night...
The Intimidators took advantage of two botched Hickory double plays en route to a 5-3 win in their home opener at Fieldcrest Cannon Stadium on Friday night. With the bases loaded and one out in the second inning, Intimidators RF Ryan Hamme grounded back to pitcher Matt Thompson who threw the second base where Crawdads shortstop Jurickson Profar cut in front of second baseman Odubel Herrera and dropped the ball. Instead of an inning-ending double-play, 1B Dan Black cross the plate for an early 1-0 lead. Thompson hit SS Kyle Eveland, bringing home another run, and Trayce Thompson reached on an RBI fielders choice, giving Kannapolis a 3-0 edge.
The Intimidators put runners on the first and third with one out in the fourth inning. 3B Jake Oester grounded to the shortstop who flipped to second base for the force out, but Herrera lost the ball on the transfer, failing to complete the double-play and allowing SS Juan Silverio to score from third putting Kannapolis up, 4-0.
Starting pitcher RHP Jake Petricka continued his strong start to the 2011 season, shutting out Hickory through five innings of work, striking out seven batters while allowing four hits and one walk. Petricka (1-0), who has yet to allow a run this season, earned the win. Hickory responded in the sixth when Josh Richmond's RBI groundout against LHP Spencer Arroyo put the Crawdads on the board, and Jhonny Gomez followed with a two-run single to pull Hickory within a run, 4-3. RHP Jimmy Ballinger helped Kannapolis out of a jam in the seventh, retiring Richmond with the go-ahead run on base for Hickory. Ballinger shut down the Crawdads in the eighth and ninth innings for his first save of 2011.
